New York Red Bulls Tickets Information
New York Red Bulls
Red Bull New York is a professional soccer organization from New Jersey, USA. Its team and playing squad is officially and popularly known as the New York Red Bulls and currently plays in Major League Soccer (MLS). Presently the team plays its home matches at the Giants Stadium located at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. However, the organization is constructing a new stadium named Red Bull Park. The team has its headquarters at Secaucus, New Jersey and its team colors are blue, red and white.
The team has been in Major League Soccer since its inauguration in 1996 and was originally known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. However from the 1998 season onwards, the team became known simply as the MetroStars. The name MetroStars was derived from John Kludge's company MetroMedia that bought into Major League Soccer in 1995. The club's original name was Empire Soccer Club, which gave birth to the name of the team's largest supporters group, Empire Supporters Club. In March 2006, the team was sold to Red Bull, the Austrian energy drink producer and was renamed the New York Red Bulls. The sale of the team created controversy amongst some fans of the original MetroStars, similar to when Red Bull bought SV Austria Salzburg and renamed the team FC Red Bull Salzburg.
The Team's History
The first player to sign with MLS and become the first MetroStar was Tab Ramos. He was joined shortly after by 1994 fellow World Cup player Tony Meola and A.C. Milan midfielder Roberto Donadoni. Peter Vermes, who played in the 1990 World Cup, became the team's first captain and the team's first coach was Eddie Firmani of the New York Cosmos. Giovanni Saverese, a previously unknown player, also joined the team and later became the team's first star performer.
When the Major League opened in 1996, there were high expectations from the team due to its high profile players and coach. However the team's performance left much to be desired. After just eight games, the team's coach Firmani left and was replaced by Carlos Queiros who only managed an even (12-12) for the rest of the season. Although the team did make it to the playoffs, they eventually lost to D.C. United. The teams poor performance season after season eventually earned it the epithet 'RotMasters', coined by sports columnist Paul Gardner at Soccer America by rearranging the letters in MetroStars.
The Stadium
The New York Red Bulls currently play and have their training facilities at the Giants Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside of New York. The stadium is owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) which also owns the Continental Airlines Arena.
The team is currently building its own soccer stadium called Red Bull Park, in Harrison, New Jersey. The stadium is expected to be ready in 2008 with a capacity of 25,000 people. The stadium is being built jointly by Red Bull and AEG, Anschutz Entertainment Group, one of the previous owners of the team. The entire franchise has a reported sale price of $100 million, including $45 million for a stake in the stadium's ownership, $25 million for the team itself, and $30 million for stadium naming rights.
Supporters Groups
The Empire Supporters Group is the New York Red Bull's oldest and most influential supporters groups, which was created back at the time of the Empire Soccer Club. Another of the team's popular supporters groups, called Raging Bull Nation, was created prior to the 2005 season when the team was still known as the MetroStars. The group initially went by the name of MetrorNation but when the team was purchased by Red Bull the group was renamed Raging Bull Nation. The group mounts support for the team by encouraging all its members to be New York Red Bull's 12th man. One of the team's oldest and largest fans and media websites is MetroFanatic.com.
Following news of the team's new stadium in its neighborhood, a new supporters group from Kearny was started up, called Kearny Army. This is one of the newest and largest supporters groups of the New York Red Bulls. Other smaller supporters groups include Cobra Kai Metro Firm, and the First Row Idiots.
