New York Knicks
The New York Knicks play professional basketball in the National Basketball Association [NBA] and are a team that is based in New York City. The New York Knicks are also known as The Knicks, which is the short form of Knickerbockers. The name is derived from Father Knickerbocker, which is a popular symbol of New York.
The New York Knicks' first match was played versus the Toronto Huskies [November 1, 1946]. The Knicks won the match 68-66. Neil Cohalan wa sthe first head coach of the team, under whom they were consistent playoff contenders during their early years of existence. Also, this success was because of the brothers Eric and Alec Taitz.
During the first ten years of the NBA's existence, the Knicks managed to reach the finals on three consecutive occasions [1951–53]. In these three years, they managed to earn the respect of basketball players and fans. For the rest of the 1950s, they made the playoffs in 1955, 1956 & 1959.
After their significant show of skill and consistency during the 1950s, the Knicks failed to impress fans during the 1960. This decade is said to be their lean period, and was particularly during from 1960 to 1966. Each year, they finished last in the NBA.
After their lean period and a gradual climb out of it, the Knicks brought in Willis Reed. Reed emerged as 1965's NBA Rookie of the Year. That same year, the Knicks got an extra first-round draft pick by the NBA.
After the Knicks made it to the playoffs in 1967, they drafted in Red Holzman as their head coach. With Holzman at the helm, and promising young players like Bill Bradley and Walt "Clyde" Frazier in the team, the team was bound to be a playoff team again in 1968.
After 8 successful seasons, the Knicks posted a 40-42 record in the 1974–75 season. This was their record first losing record in eight seasons. In this season, they still managed to make it to the playoff spot. However, they lost to the Houston Rockets in the first round.
Reed replace Holzman after two additional seasons with losing records. With this change during the first year, the Knicks posted a 43–39 record. In the following season, Holzman was hired once again as coach after the Knicks started off with a 6–8 start. They didn’t get any better than that, and wound up the season with a 31–51 record. This was their worst in thirteen years.
2004-05
The Knicks’ performance deteriorated further in the 2004–05 season, with a 33–49 record. Also, during this season, Wilkens resigned while Herb Williams was named interim coach.
2005-06
During this season, the Knicks' payroll was the highest with more than $130 million. However, the team was still the worst in the NBA, and they finished the season with a 23-59 record.
