New York Islanders Tickets Information

New York Islanders
The New York Islanders are a Uniondale based team that play professional ice hockey. It plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL (National Hockey League). The team started playing in 1972, and by the early 1980s they won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships.

After the NHL came to Long Island between 1970 and 1974, the Islanders began to show their presence wherever they performed. By 1975, the team managed to pull off one of the biggest turnarounds in NHL history. The Islanders scored 88 points, which was 32 more than their score in the previous season. This score won them their first playoff berth. They also won the series in the third game. J.P. Parise is noted for his score just 11 seconds into the extra session. The Islanders were headed by Potvin, with forwards Harris, Clark Gillies, Nystrom, and goaltenders Glenn Resch and Smith.

The New York Islanders’ Dynasty Years are considered to be between 1980 and 1984. They had a disappointing season in 1979, and Arbour then decided that he would remain focused on the team's energy during the playoffs. With this mindset, they won the Stanley Cup, and did so for 4 consecutive years. After their surge in the early 1980s, the Islanders were still very competitive. This is why their 1984-91 period is known as their Post-Dynasty period. Beyond 1991, the Islanders began to see new faces in the team. Though there were some experienced heads in the team, generally, the team wore a newer yet skilled look that was ready to surge during the coming seasons.

During the 1990s, it became evident that there were severe management issues. Maloney, since taking over in 1992, was accused of only attempting to upgrade the roster when he let Healy. However, towards the end of the failed 1995 campaign, Maloney was of the view that core players he had left alone need to be completely revamped. This is when he wanted to execute a rebuilding project. He let go Turgeon and Malakhov who went to Montreal, and took in Kirk Muller and Mathieu Schneider. Hogue went to Toronto in exchange for goaltender Eric Fichaud. Also, Maloney let go the Islander’s top scorer, Ferraro.

By 2000, the Islanders, as a team was sold by Milstein and Gluckstern to Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar [Computer Associates executives]. Due to stable ownership, Milbury could afford to invest in free agents.

Milbury got rid of Steve Stirling [January 12, 2006]. He then named assistant Brad Shaw as the interim head coach. Milbury himself said that he would step down, as soon as the team found a replacement.

During the offseason there was considerable tumult. Charles Wang, the owner of the team, appointed Ted Nolan as coach and Neil Smith as GM. Smith was released hardly a month later. Garth Snow filled this spot.

During this time, the Islanders made few free agent acquisitions. These included bringing in defensemen Brendan Witt and Tom Poti. They also brought in forwards Mike Sillinger and Chris Simon. Further, they signed goaltender Rick DiPietro to a massive 67.5 million dollar contract. The contract was for 15 years, which is one of the longest contracts to be signed in NHL history.
