NBA Playoffs Tickets Information
Basketball is a game of thrill, enthusiasm, stamina and presence of mind, and sports fans always get excited when there is an upcoming basketball event of a level as high as NBA Playoffs. The playoffs are basically qualifying round games before the NBA Finals . It is an elimination tournament played on the basis of best of seven rules and brings together sixteen teams from National Basketball Association’s Western and Eastern Conference in a competition with each other. The four teams that score the best on points table are qualified to play the NBA Finals .
National Basketball Association is the highest level organizing and regulatory authority for professional basketball competitions in the North America and has been there since 1946. 30 franchised clubs are members of this association predominantly belonging to the United States, with only one club located outside the United States i.e. in Canada. National Basketball Association holds regular competitions among its member clubs including a championship that culminates in NBA Finals deciding the champion of this game across the United States and Canada. As a part of this run for the ultimate championship, NBA Playoffs are played that play a pivotal role in deciding about the fate of different clubs and their positions on points table.
There are different divisions in each conference, each having its champion decided before the playoffs on the basis of internal competitions. There are clearly defined rules for positioning or ‘seeding’ the teams on charts that ensure their placement on basis of their past performance. The rules also ensure that the best two teams in the association are ranked at first two positions, while the divisional champions get positions not lower than fourth. The rules also identify tie breakers just in case there is a conflict among teams or there are more than one team at the same position, with different tie breakers for two teams and three teams on same position.
History of NBA Playoffs narrates that they were initially founded as a three stage tournament in 1947, soon after the association came into being. The NBA Playoffs at first followed a similar pattern as that of Stanley Cup playoffs that were played in 1930s. Six teams used to compete in the tournament in those days that was expanded to eight teams in 1949. The final was played on a best of seven basis. Prior to 1950, the association was called as the BAA or Basketball Association of America that was renamed to its current name as National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1950. The number of participating teams was brought down to six again in 1954, just like it started initially in 1947. There were some other changes made to the format of the game in those years. It was in late 1950s and early 1960s that the semifinals and finals of NBA Playoffs were changed to best of five and best of seven formats respectively. In 1967, the number of participating teams was once again increased to eight. In 1970, the divisions were grouped as conferences and there were some changes made to the configuration of the playoffs to adjust to the new conference based system.
The playoffs have always been a topic of discussion among NBA enthusiasts owing to the great level of gameplay as well as some controversies regarding its positioning system. Some critics believe that the new system introduced by the NBA contains significant errors, and there is a chance that some teams can reach a higher position only on the basis of tie breakers instead of its performance. Nevertheless, the NBA Playoffs have always remained some of the most watched and most celebrated games of basketball in this region regardless of the controversies.
