Franchise history
Prior to the formation of an NHL, there was the Montreal Canadiens team. They were established on December 4, 1909. The league's creator, Ambrose O'Brien, said that the new league required a French-Canadian team in order to create a natural rivalry with the Montreal Wanderers and the Montreal Shamrocks. Jimmy Gardiner, the NHA's other founder, recommended that O'Brien name the team the Canadiens.
The Canadiens and another four other NHA teams opted out of the NHA. They formed the NHL in 1917. This decision came from a long-running dispute with Blue Shirts owner Eddie Livingstone.
The Canadiens' stars (Morenz and Joliat) were phased out by the early 1930s. Their performances were far from impressive, and this led to the NHL giving the Habs the rights to all French Canadian players for 2 years. This was since they had the second-best record in the NHL [1936-1937]. Morenz suffered multiple fractures of his leg and died on January 28, 1937. he developed blood clots in his fractured leg which caused a stroke.
1967 was a momentous year for the country. A world's fair Expo 67 was conducted held in Montreal. Atthis point, the Canadiens swore to bring the Stanley Cup to the Quebec Pavillion of the Canadian Showcase. That year, the Stanley Cup final had the Canadiens up against the Maple Leafs. However, the Leafs took the cup that year in an upset, and the Habs were forced to watch the Leafs parade the Cup in downtown Toronto.
The Montreal Canadiens earned their league-leading 24th Stanley Cup versus the Los Angeles Kings [1993]. This meant more to them because it was the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup.
In 1995, the Canadiens missed out the playoffs. This was the first time in a quarter of a century that this happened.
On October 2, 2005, there was a major announcement about the one hundred year anniversary of Les Habs. 3 more jersey numbers would retire. These included Dickie Moore's, Yvan Cournoyer's, and Bernard "Boom Boom" Geoffrion. Geoffrion died the very day his number was to be retired.
