Missouri Tigers Tickets Information
Missouri Tigers
The Missouri Tigers athletics program is known as one of the best because it has brought about significant success through its implementation. Their program includes the extramural and intramural sports teams of the University of Missouri–Columbia. The name ‘The Missouri Tigers’ emerges from a band armed guards that were known as the Missouri Tigers. These guards protected Columbia from Confederate guerrillas during the Civil War [1854].
The University of Missouri Columbia is known as the flagship institution of the University of Missouri System. Women's teams in this university are sometimes called the Lady Tigers. However, generally, men’s and women’s teams are known as the Tigers.
The University of Missouri or Mizzou is a member of the Big 12 Conference. It is the only NCAA Division I-A program in Missouri.
Baseball:
The first Missouri Tigers baseball team played in 1868. Their first recorded season took place in 1891. Former Missouri Tiger baseball players remain important in professional baseball, and they continue to grow each year. 3 players signed contracts [2005], and brought the total number of former MU players signing pro contracts up to 134. The present MU head coach, Tim Jamieson, has witnessed 29 players in his 10-year contract.
Traditions
MU vs. KU always makes interesting competition. Their biggest rival, the KU Jayhawks, compete with them in the annual Border Showdown. Traditional basketball rivalry also exists with the Illinois Fighting Illini. This is known as the Braggin' Rights Game.
Homecoming
The University of Missouri lays claim to being the originator of the homecoming tradition. Prior to 1911, matches versus the University of Kansas were played in Kansas City. Later, there was a change in conference regulations that called for intercollegiate football games to be played on campus starting in 1911.
For fear of game attendance dropping, Missouri coach, C. L. Brewer, appealed for the "Old Grads" to "Come Back Home" and boost attendance. With this, the fans responded well, and the crowd at Rollins Field in Columbia grew to over ten thousand. This home coming event [1911] is considered to be the first home coming game, and is recognized by Missouri, The NCAA, Trivial Pursuit, and Jeopardy!
Other schools that lay claim to pioneering the home coming event include Baylor University, Illinois, and Indiana University. Baylor claims that they held their first homecoming game in 1909. Illinois claims that they had it on October 15, 1910, and Indiana claims the same thing on October 21, 1910. However, Missouri’s claim is the one that is accepted over these ones.
