The Mississippi State Bulldogs are the athletic teams that play for the Mississippi State University. They take part in NCAA's Division I in the competitive 12-member Southeastern Conference.
Mississippi State plays in the NCAA in football, softball, tennis, basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, volleyball, track and field, and cross country running. With competing in all these events, Mississippi State University has won 28 SEC Championships.
Football:
Mississippi State has developed 14 All-Americans and 54 All-SEC members. Mississippi State took the SEC Western Division Championship and participated in the 1998 SEC Championship Game, that lead Tennessee in the fourth quarter. However, they fell 24-14 in front of 74,000 fans in the Georgia Dome.
Mississippi State carried on to play in the AT&T Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas versus a strong Texas Longhorns team. The Bulldogs lost the game 38-11. In 1999, Mississippi State finished 10-2 and ended on the #12 final ranking. In the past 30 years, this is the best record for a final ranking of any Division I-Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in Mississippi.
Men's Basketball:
In basketball, MSU won SEC Championships in 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1991, & 2004. They also won SEC Tournament Championships in 1996 & 2002. They played in the NCAA Basketball Tournament as well in 1963, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, & 2005. They additionally played in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 1974, 1990, 1999, 2001, & 2007.
By 1963, the team created history when they defied the Governor of Mississippi's order. They were told not to play in the NCAA tournament, because their opponents [Loyola University of Chicago] had African-Americans playing for them. Coach Babe McCarthy took the team out to play Loyola.
Women's Basketball:
The Lady Bulldogs have demonstrated improvement during the last 10 years. Nine Lady Bulldogs have managed to make the All-SEC team 16 times. More impressive than this is the fact that they have earned 28 SEC honor roll memberships since 1990.
Baseball:
MSU won SEC Championships in 1948, 1949, 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1979, 1987, & 1989. They also took the SEC Tournament Championships in 1979, 1985, 1987, 2001, & 2005. They have also made appearances to 29 NCAA Baseball Regionals, and have even made it to the College World Series 8 times. The highest they have finished is 3rd place [1985].
Tennis:
Since 1990, one notable success has been their tennis program established among the nation's elite. The program is rated in the top 25 rankings and has been rated in this position 12 times between 1990-2001. The program has also been rated in the top 10 seven times during the same period. Under their head coach, Sylvain Guichard, the team has continued to make its appearances over the past three seasons
Rivals
Mississippi State's arch rival is The University of Mississippi's "Rebels". This team is also known as the "Ole Miss". Other teams that can be considered to be their rivals include Alabama and LSU. The Bulldogs and Rebels are known for closing each football season with the Egg Bowl. The one that wins gets the Golden Egg Trophy.
