Los Angeles Kings Tickets Information
Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings is a well-known professional ice hockey team from in Los Angeles, California. This team is a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The "Forum Blue and Gold" years took place from 1967-68 to 1987-88.
Both the Western Hockey League, as well as the Pacific Coast Hockey League had many teams in California. Minor pro hockey became successful in California in the early 1960s. Since there was limited area, the National Hockey League could not expand to Los Angeles.
The "Miracle on Manchester," is named so because of it being perhaps the greatest comeback in NHL playoff history. Apart from the miraculous comeback versus the mighty Oilers, they also managed to eliminate them in 5 games.
The Kings missed out on the playoffs in the following two seasons. They were brushed out of the playoffs by the Oilers. This was when the Oilers took their second straight Stanley Cup championship.
Dionne relinquished coaching the team on March 10, 1987, and he moved on to coach the New York Rangers. The Kings by this time had new skaters to take them into the next decade. These included Luc Robitaille, Bernie Nicholls, Jimmy Carson, and defenseman Steve Duchesne.
The Kings continued to be bounced out of the first round of the playoffs until 1988-89, a season that would be a big turning point for the franchise.
Black and Silver Era is between 1988-89 1996-97. In 1987, Bruce McNall bought the Kings. Under him, the team was turned into a Stanley Cup contender almost immediately [August 9, 1988]. This was when he signed the league's top player, Gretzky. This purchase shook the hockey world.
The first season that Gretzky was wit the LA Kings, the team registered 168 points with 54 goals and 114 assists. He also won his ninth Hart Memorial Trophy and emerged as the league's Most Valuable Player. Additionally, Gretzky took the Kings to second position in the Smythe Division with a 42-31-7 record. The team stood 4th in the NHL overall rating.
Joseph Cohen and Jeffrey Sudikoff bought the team from McNall when he headed to prison. The new owners could not elevate the team's financial standing, and also could not bring in new talent with limited funding provided. Apart from Gretzky, the team did not look good on paper. As a result, the Kings missed the playoffs for 4 seasons [1993-94 to 1996-97], despite the team being bought by Edward P. Roski Jr., and Philip Anschutz [October 1995].
On January 13, 2007, the Kings placed Yutaka Fukufuji in goal for the 3rd period of their match versus the St. Louis Blues. This was the first game in hockey history in which a Japanese-born player played in an NHL regular season game.
For the 2007-2008 off-season, the Kings agreed to 5 unrestricted free agents. These included left wings Ladislav Nagy and Kyle Calder, center Michal Handzus, and defensemen Brad Stuart and Tom Preissing.
