Leeds Carnegie
English rugby union club Leeds Carnegie is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire and presently plays at the country's highest level of the sport, the Guinness Premiership. The club returned to the Premiership for 2007-08 at the first opportunity, and after devaluing the season before, they had won the National Division One championship in 2006-07. From 1998 till the 2006-07 seasons, Leeds Tykes was the name used by the club, but on 14 May 2007 it was declared that Leeds Metropolitan University would buy a 51% stake in the club and modify the name to Carnegie College, in order to synchronize with the university's sport department,.

Headingley & Roundhay
Since1877, Headingley has had a tradition of rugby, after the youth became fascinated by rugby after watching Leeds St. John's, which later changed to the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team. Their first match was against the Saints second team in November. Leeds St John's was infact, the original rugby union team was and it played at the Militia Barracks ground prior to moving to Cardigan Fields. In 1878, the name Headingley was taken on and thus, Cardigan Fields was used for rugby and cricket matches. On 5 January 1884, England played against Wales there and won 5-3 in front of around 2,000 spectators. The club playing there was then scattered but again in 1885, it was rehabilitated under the sponsorship of the Headingley Hill Chapel Sunday Class and played matches on local fields against local teams, including Roundhay.

In 1888, the Cardigan Estate was sold out and Lot 17a was bought instead by a group of Leeds citizens, who proposed to form the city's leading sports club. Lot 17a became the present day Headingley Stadium. Leeds St John's played their final season using that name from 1889 till 1890, prior to becoming the football section of Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Company Ltd the following season. With Headingley still under construction, Leeds' first game took place at Cardigan Fields in the home side against Otley and thus won had the match. The first game at Headingley was played on September 20, 1890, when Manningham were beaten by one try and one dropped goal to nil. Leeds were originators of the Northern Union when it broke away from the Rugby Football Union in 1895. On 7th September, 1895, Leeds' made their first appearance in the Northern Union and attained a 6-3 victory at Leigh, the opening day of the new competition.

The mastermind behind the magnificent plan of developing the playing fields into the Headingley ground was visionary Lord Hawke’s, who was also behind the creation of the Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Company and the purchase of lot 17A of the Cardigan Estate. Nevertheless, it resulted in the downfall of the Leeds club which split into two. The part that was to become the Rugby League club in 1895-6 stayed at the Headingley ground and Headingley RUFC was recreated in 1891, ultimately finished in 1902 in Clarence Fields, Kirkstall. Two other internationals were played in Leeds before the divide between Union and League, which took place against Ireland and Scotland, and was a defeat for both.

In July 1998, the club merged again, but this time it was with Leeds Rhinos to form Leeds Rugby Limited. The Tykes ended up at the 6th position in their first season in Premiership Two with the Tongan scoring 250 points and Simon Middleton and Jonathan Scales scoring ten tries apiece. Since 1996 the Tykes have played at Leeds Rhinos' Headingley stadium and Phil Davies became their player-coach. In their first season they finished 8th in the old twelve team fourth division. In 1998 they were re-titled to Leeds Tykes after the formation of Leeds Rugby Ltd, a merger of the Rhinos and Tykes under one organzition. Subsequently they were propped up to the Premiership in 2001. In attaining promotion Richard Le Bas scored 337 points and Graham Mackay, a product of Leeds Rhinos, scored 19 tries, both club season records which still stand to date. In 2001, Tom Palmer became the first ever Leeds Tykes player to cover for England when he appeared as a substitute against the USA. The Leeds Tykes team for their first ever game in the Premiership on 2nd September 2001 against Bath, was: Shelley, Holt, Wring, C. Murphy, Palmer, Mather, Ponton, Fea'unati, Benton, Bachop, Emmerson, Woof, Mayer, Scarbrough, Benson. Replacements: Hogg for Mather (74), Davies for Fea'unati (75), Kerr for Fea'unati (26), O'Reilly for Mayer (73), Fea'unati for Kerr (33). Not Used: Luffman, Clarke, Le Bas.

The Tykes carried on, their first season after finishing last in the league when the National League One champions were deprived of entry into the Premiership in 2002. The Champions Rotherham Titans were declined promotion to the Zurich Premiership for the 2002/03 season due to facilities failing to meet Premiership criteria. The next season Leeds finished fifth in the table and made their Heineken Cup début in December 2003. In their four seasons in the Zurich Premiership, they appeared on the ninth position and had reached a couple of domestic cup semi-finals.

On 1st July 2007 the Leeds Tykes became identified as Leeds Carnegie after their return to the Premiership next season. According to Leeds, a “ground-breaking” deal has been signed with Leeds Metropolitan University, which has a majority 51% stake in the club. Carnegie College is part of the university's sport department.
