The name Hawkeye originally comes from the state of Iowa which is also referred as "The Hawkeye State". The state of Iowa got that name through a campaign ran by James G.
Edwards and Judge David Rorer of Burlington. Burlington was established a year later after the Black Hawk War of 1832. Before the editor of the Fort Madison Patriot James G.
Edwards, moved his newspaper to Burlington, he proposed the name "Hawk-eyes" in 1838. And later when he moved his paper to Burlington, in 1843, he renamed it Burlington Hawkeye, in honor to his friend Chief Black Hawk. Both the Edwards and Rorer kept on going until they got the formal approval for this name.
The Iowa Hawkeyes are the member of Big Ten Conference formerly known as the Western Conference, in NCAA Division I-A. In 1889 the University of the Iowa first time officially gave recognition to a football team, before that, it was played as club sport. In 1899, the team got the invitation from the Big Ten Conference after they came out undefeated in their first ever season they competed in as Iowa Hawkeyes.
Their first ever Big Ten Conference title came to them after they went undefeated for the second consecutive year, in 1900. Their next Big Ten Conference titles came to them in 1921 and 1922. The team led by the Hall of Fame coach Howard Jones won 20 straight games in 1920's, but as soon as Jones left, the teams downfall started and they went really terrible in 1930's, until in 1939 when the team was led by the coach Eddie Anderson, they scored several upsetting wins, shooting up into the National Rankings.
The University of Iowa's men's Basketball team, Iowa Hawkeyes, was a great success 1970's, 80's and 90's era. Iowa Hawkeyes have won 2 Big Ten Tournaments, in 2001 and in 2006, and won their eight Big Ten Conference Championships with the last win in 1979. They were among the final four in the years 1955, 1956 and 1980.
The University of Iowa's wrestling program is one of the most decorated one. They have won 20 National Championships, placing themselves on the number two spot in the National Rankings coming after Oklahoma State Cowboys, who have the first spot. The team begin with the first coach E.G. Schroeder, in 1911. After E.G. Schroeder the team was coached by Mike Howard and under his direction the team went to compete for their first Big Ten meet in 1926.
After Howard coached the team for the duration of 1921 to 1952, David McCuskey took Howard's place. Dan Gable took on as the coach in 1972 and led the Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA Championships and 21 consecutive Big Ten Championships with the streak of nine consecutive NCAA Team Championships. Even though Gable was dead sure that the Hawkeyes would win the tenth time as well but it didn't come out as he planned and the Hawkeyes finished second.
