The Gwinnett Gladiators play their home games at The Arena at Gwinnett Center also known as The Gwinnett Arena . The franchise as we know now was founded in 2003 but its origin’s can be traced back to the days when the Mobile Mystics were formed in 1995. That team, just like the Gwinnett Gladiators, was a minor league ice hockey side. The Mystics were an ECHL team based in Mobile, Alabama that played its home games at the Mobile Civic Center . The team went as far as the playoffs of the Kelly Cup for a staggering five seasons out of seven. The team was shut down in 2002 and shifted to Duluth, Georgia. The franchise was renamed the Gwinnett Gladiators after its relocation to the Gwinnett area.
The Gwinnett Gladiators just like the Mystics were a part of the ECHL and played their first season (2003-2004) being coached by Jeff Pyle. Pyle was the Mystics coach since 1998 right till the end when the team folded in 2002. When the Gwinnett Gladiators were formed it was only natural that Pyle would be the one to lead them forward into a new era. The franchise affiliated itself with the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) and its affiliate in AHL the Chicago Wolves . The Gladiators have reached the playoffs of the Kelly Cup a whopping six times since its inception in 2002. In 2006, the team was crowned champions for both the Eastern Conference and the South Division . In the Kelly Cup finals, that season, they lost to the Alaska Aces in a five game series.
Jeff Pyle left the team in July 2011 to take over as head coach of the Texas Stars of the AHL. The Gwinnett Gladiators did not let that deter them and replaced Pyle with the Wheeling Nailers former assistant coach John Wroblewski. The coaching position wasn’t the only change for the team in 2011 because their affiliate the Thrashers were relocating to Winnipeg and the Gladiators left the organization due to that. The team’s search for a new affiliate ended on 17 th August, 2011 when they announced their affiliation with the Portland Pirates and the Phoenix Coyotes for the 2011-12 season. Another affiliation agreement, for 2011-2012 season, was signed with the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans who were the Sabres affiliate in the AHL.
