D.C. United was formed in 1995 by USSF (United States Soccer Federation) fulfilling the requirement of FIFA (International Football Federation), MLS selected D.C. United from applications of 22 teams along with 9 other good teams. D.C. United are headquartered in Washington D.C. and they play all their home games at the very huge Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium located at 2400 South East Capitol Street Southeast in Washington with a capacity for a crowd of over 45000 fans. The team’s official color is black and red and their nick is also Black and Red, the logo consists of red background with a large black eagle in the foreground and the team’s uniform is full black with red lines.

D.C. United started of with a good performance as they played their first MLS Regular Season in 1996 and stood 2 nd in the Eastern Conference went on to win the MLS playoffs and made history by winning their first U.S Cup defeating Rochester Raging Rhinos in their first debut year of play which is a unique record in itself. In 1997 the team was again very geared up as they stood 1 st for 3 consecutive years in the Eastern Conference and also won the MLS Playoffs 2 times in 1997 and 99 but lost in the finals of 1998. From 2000 onwards the team went into a bad phase and till 2005 they didn’t manage to win MLS Regular season and mostly didn’t qualify for the playoffs except for one occasion in 2004 when they won the MLS Cup for the 4 th and the last time till date.

I n 2005-06, they shined again by standing 1 st in the MLS Regular Season but weren’t able to show a great play and lost 2006 playoff and U.S Cup semifinals, and lost 2007 playoff quarterfinals and couldn’t proceed to the quarterfinals of U.S Cup. In 2008 the initial performance of D.C. United was not very impressive as they stood 6 th in the Conference and didn’t qualify for the playoffs but they stunned everyone by winning the U.S Cup for the 2 nd and last time as of yet.

D.C. United also competes regularly in the CONCACAF League Cup which is a joint tournament of 3 regions that include North America, Central America and Caribbean, D.C. United won this prestigious cup in 1998 becoming the first ever American club to win it, apart from them only Los Angeles Galaxy have won this cup. D.C.
