Although the Western Mountain Conference was formed in 1999, the athletic program at Colorado State traces its legacy to 1893 when the university's football team first assembled into action. In their 115 year history, the Colorado State Rams have competed in five distinct conferences. From 1893 to 1908 they were part of the Colorado Football Association. From 1909 to 1937 they became members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. From 1938 to 1998, the Rams were part of the Mountain States Conference, Independent Schools and Western Athletic Conference respectively.
