Brown Bears
The Brown Bears is a name shared by all sports teams at Brown University, a university located in Providence, Rhode Island in the United States. The Bears are part of the Ivy League conference. Brown's mascot is Bruno while Seal brown, cardinal red and white are the school colors.
Brown Bears compete in 37 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I sports. They are the third among all Division I institutions for number of sports offered.
The university offers both men and women sports in baseball, basketball, football, cross country, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling and men's and women's crew besides several other sports.
The Bears sports history dates back to university's formation. The Bears fielded their first team in 1878. This was a football team that competed against Amherst College in the inaugural game. Today, the Bears, along with all other Ivy League teams, compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
The mascot of the university also has a long history behind it. It is not the first mascot that university has adopted. Brown's first mascot was introduced in 1902. It was a burro, and was made public during a game against Harvard.
In 1905 The Bears introduced Helen, the university's first live bear mascot, at a game against Dartmouth. The current mascot Bruno was introduced in 1921. It originally used to be a live bear, however, from the late 60's; it is being represented by a person in costume.
The Brown Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1970. It recognizes the individuals and teams who have brought special honor to Brown through outstanding performance and achievement in the field of athletics.
The Hall of Fame symbol is the University Hall bell, historically associated with Brown student life and athletic victories. The Brown also has a cheerleading squad that accompanies the Bears in each of their games.
The squad consists of 20 members both male and female and leads the fans of the Bears inside and outside the playing field.
Team members cheer for all home football games and select away games during the fall season while in the winter season, the squad appears at all home Men's Basketball games as well as selected home Women's Basketball games.
