Aaron Lewis Tickets Information
Members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and based at Atlanta, Georgia – the Atlanta Thrashers are a professional ice-hockey team having Philips Arena as their home dome.
In 1980 the team known as Atlanta Flames headed for Calgary where they were renewed as Calgary Flames. June 25th, 1997 brought the team back home – Atlanta, Georgia when Atlanta was granted an NHL franchise. On their return they gained recognition by the name of Atlanta Thrashers.
The epithet “Thrashers”, chosen through admirer’s ballot basically originated from “Brown Thrasher” – the official state bird of Georgia. Omni – earlier a home to the Flames of Atlanta’s first NHL team was modified to form Philips Arena – the new home to Thrashers.
During the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the restoration of the Thrashers began with a general selection of the team resulting in Patrik Stefan’s selection. First game was played on October 2nd, 1999. Playing against New Jersey Devils – who emerged as the Stanley Cup Champions, Captain Kelly Buchberger of Thrashers hit the first goal though the game was lost by 4-1.
A group of Atlanta Spirit (LLC by Time Warner) consisting Bruce Levenson, Ed Pestkowitz, Rutherford Seydel, Beau Turner, Michael Gearon, Sr., Michael Gearon, Jr., Felix Riccio and Steve Belkin bought National Basketball Association’s Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers on September 21st, 2003. Just five days later, one of the stars of the team, forward player Dany Heatley faced a catastrophic accident when his Ferrari ran down into a single-car accident. With him in the car was Center player of the team Dan Snyder. Dany was fatally injured. He had a broken jaw and arm, sprained wrist and torn ACL and MCL. Five days later came the sad news of demise of Dan, since the infection emerging from the accident had become lethal. Dany’s blood alcohol count was beneath the legal limit and he was driving at 80 miles an hour yet his careless wild driving led to criminal accusation which was settled over a period of three years combined with community service. The NHL season for year 2003-04 was dedicated to Dan by the Thrashers.
Thrashers mounted the victory and fame with some significant highlights under the captain Shawn McEachern. During the first seven games Ilya Kovalchuk scored eight goals including two hat tricks, one in a 7-2 rout of the Chicago Blackhawks and the other in an overthrowing victory against the Nashville Predators. These persistent remarkable victories throughout the season brought a jolting setback for the teams and fans of Toronto Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins, the Ottawa Senators, the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Islanders.
Eager to give a tough fight to others, Thrashers picked up lots of experienced players like Mike Dunham, Peter Bondra, Bobby Holik, Jaroslav Modry, Scott Mellanby before the 2005-06 season began. On August 23rd, 2005, in an epic agreement for forward player Marian Hossa and defense-man Greg de Vries, Dany Heatley was traded to Ottawa Senators.
Season 2005-06 brought with it the luck for Thrashers. They won a club-record of 41 games even though facing several injuries such as Lehtonen being injured twice. Once he pulled his groin in just the first few minutes of the first game that could cost him the major part of the season, followed by the April 6th game when he was hit by Tampa Bay's Chris Dingman. Mike Dunham - yet another veteran number-one net minder from the backup stepped in but got injured in just a few games. This scenario left Michael Garnett and Adam Berkhoel to play rationally. Journeyman goalie Steve Shields was also among the Thrashers but was injured in first ten games. The rest of the season depended on Dunham since Garnett was also injured in a game against the Washington Capitals.
The first official event on the new SportSouth was a National Hockey League game in which the Atlanta Thrashers faced the Carolina Hurricanes played on October 13, 2006 in which Hurricanes won their first game of the season with a 4-3. Team Captain Scott Mellanby proclaimed retirement on April 24th, 2007 followed by termination of Coach Bob Hartley after a 0-6 start on October 17th, 2007.
