Arkansas Razorbacks Tickets Information
The college sports teams at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas are known as The Arkansas Razorbacks. Their other popular name is the Hogs. For any of the all-male sports team at the university, the term Arkansas Razorbacks is applied while Women's teams at the University of Arkansas are generally referred to as "The Lady'Backs" The Razorbacks take their name from the feral pig of the same name. The Arkansas Razorbacks have the distinction of being the only major sports team in the US with a porcine nickname.
History
23 years after classes were first held at the university, a contest was held on campus to select school colors in 1894.. Cardinal (a shade of deep red) was selected over heliotrope, a shade of moderate purple. That same year, the first Arkansas football team known as the "Arkansas Cardinals" was formed. The team was successful in scoring two wins against Fort Smith High School during the first year.
Broyles successfully led the Razorbacks out of the Southwest Conference and into the Southeastern Conference, setting off a major realignment in college football in 1990. Arkansas was able to win its first SEC Western Division Title in football in 1995.
Richardson's basketball Hogs won the NCAA Tournament in 1994 Nolan. Richardson's basketball teams were very strong. They challenged for the SEC and National Championships regularly during the 1990s. While compiling a record of 389-169 (.697) in his 17 years as the head coach. his team was successful in making three trips to the Final Four and two trips to the championship game.
Following the somewhat controversial firing of Nolan Richardson, Stan Heath was hired as the head coach of the men's basketball team on 28 March 2002. During the period of his coaching, his teams showed great improvement.
Stan Heath was fired as the head coach of the men's basketball team on 26 March 2007 and John Pelphrey was made the new head coach of the University of Arkansas basketball team on April 9th, 2007.
Football:
The 2006-2007 season was started with a loss against #6 USC Trojans by the Arkansas Razorbacks.
However, the Razorbacks rebounded from that loss and went on to win ten straight games. These wins also included two ranked teams (#2 Auburn Tigers and #13 Tennessee Volunteers). Eventually, they were successful in clinching the Southeastern Conference Western Division Championship The ten game winning streak finally cracked with a loss against the LSU Tigers at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, AR. The SEC Championship Game against the Florida Gators was also lost by the Razorbacks.
On January 01, 2007, the Razorbacks were then invited to the Capital One Bowl to play against the #5 Wisconsin Badgers in Orlando, FL. However, the Razorbacks lost the game with a score of 14-17. With an overall record of 10-4 and with a SEC record of 7-1, the Arkansas Razorbacks finished the season
Basketball
John Pelphrey is the current head coach for the men's basketball team. The Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus is the venue of the home games of the basketball team.
Under the coaching leadership of Nolan Richardson, The Hogs were successful in winning the NCAA tournament in 1994. The following year, they appeared in the championship game but were beaten by UCLA. The Razorbacks have been successful in making to NCAA Final Four in 1941, 1945, 1978, 1990, 1994 and 1995.
2006-2007 Season:
Stan Heath was men's basketball team coach during the 2006-2007 season. He was fired at the end of the season, on March 26, 2007.
Baseball
Led by former Razorback Dave Van Horn, the baseball team reached the 2004 College World Series, joining previous appearances in Omaha in 1979, 1985, 1987 and 1989.
Baum Stadium is the venue of the home games of the team. Currently, new renovations have been made to Baum.New skyboxes are being added down the lines.
Lady'Backs:
The women's teams at the University of Arkansas are referred to as Lady'Backs. These include basketball, cross country, track, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and volleyball. A combined 17 SEC championships have been won by the Lady'Back teams.
Mascots
The University of Arkansas Razorbacks has a number of costumed mascots that attend most major sporting events. The traditional mascot for the University is Big Red (aka the "Fighting Razorback"). The intimidating fighting spirit of the Razorbacks at all athletic events is represented by it.
Sue E., is the female hog. Her costume changes and dancing ability has made her very famous.
Pork Chop is the "kid" mascot.
