Alabama A m Bulldogs
With uniforms in maroon and white, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs is an American men’s basketball team which plays in Southwestern Athletic Conference of NCAA Division I. They have been at the height of their success under its head coach Vann Pettaway. He led the team to eight NCAA Division II playoff appearances, seven Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) titles, and six SIAC Tournament crowns. Under Pettaway the Bulldogs have averaged more than 20 wins a season, and have had eight seasons where they have recorded 20 or more victories. During Pettaway's first 11 years as head coach, Alabama A&M competed at the NCAA Division II level in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In that time, he experienced 10 winning seasons and advanced to the regional tournament seven times (1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, & 1997). Since 1996 the logo of Alabama A&M Bulldogs has been a bulldog head over red script.

The Bulldogs’ History
In 1998-99 the Bulldogs began the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I as a part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They suffering the first losing season by posting a 10-17 record their first year of SWAC play, the team charged ahead and made records of 18-10, 17-11 and 19-10 each of the next three years. After missing the SWAC tournament the first three seasons in the league while serving a mandatory probationary period for moving to the Division I level, the Bulldogs were finally eligible to make a run at the SWAC tournament title and a birth in the NCAA tournament in 2001-02. After posting a shaky 4-6 record in the first 10 games of the season, Bulldogs responded, winning 14 of their final 17 regular season games, securing a #2 seed in the 2002 SWAC tournament. Injuries during the 2002-03 season set the program back. However, in 2005, the Bulldogs made history by capturing their first conference basketball title on the Division I level, both regular-season and tournament, and earned a berth into the NCAA Division I National Tournament. The 2006-07 proved to be a rebuilding year as the Bulldogs posted a 10-20 overall record with nine freshman on its 15-man roster. The expectations are renewed for the 2007-08 campaign as the Bulldogs will have one of the most experienced teams in the SWAC. Under head coach Vann Pettaway the Bulldogs made it to a top three finish in the SWAC in three straight seasons prior to last year. The 2006-07 proved to be a rebuilding year as the Bulldogs posted a 10-20 overall record with nine freshman on its 15-man roster. The expectations are renewed for the 2007-08 campaign as the Bulldogs will have one of the most experienced teams in the SWAC.

Season 2007-2008
This season Alabama A&M dropped a 67-56 decision to Auburn, a team from Ole Miss' Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs have now lost their last three games to fall to 3-6 overall, including 0-4 mark in true road games. It has struggled mightily shooting the ball this season, as the squad has connected on only 36.7 percent of its field goal attempts so far. They also had some trouble at the foul line, as their 63.9 percent efficiency can certainly stand some improvement. The top offensive performer on the roster is Evan Hilton, as he is posting 14.0 ppg on the strength of his 40.5 percent shooting from three-point range. However, he has missed more than half of his 31 free throw attempts and this fact is quite puzzling. The only other double-digit scorer in the mix for A&M is Trant Simpson, who checks in with 10.7 ppg. In the loss to Auburn back on December 22nd, Hilton scored 18 points, while Simpson was close behind with 17 points to go along with six assists. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs connected on only 35.5 percent of their field goal attempts and were outscored 11-5 from the foul line. They also permitted the Tigers to shoot 50 percent from the field. Alabama A&M opened a double-digit lead three minutes into the game and easily won its first conference road game with a 94-61 victory over Grambling State Monday night. The win not only snaps a five-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, but it is also the first conference road win for them since Feb. 26, 2006 against Texas Southern.

Team’s Roster
The Bulldogs current basketball roster includes Hilton Evan, Gladness Mickell, Hester Cornelius, Jackson Desmond, Simpson Trant, Inman Jonathan, Smith Lanorris, Williams Andrew, Norris Norris, Belt Jonathan, Ogbara Kudus, Deshields Jabari, English James, Porter Reggie, Cross Iaiah, and Lawrence Curtis.
