Wiggles Tickets Information
The Wiggles are an Australian band that entertains young children across the world. The band’s four members are known by children as Sam wearing yellow, Murray in red, Jeff in purple and Anthony in blue. Since its formation in 1991, the band has achieved worldwide recognition for its children's albums, videos, television series and concert appearances. According to Business Review Weekly magazine, in 2005, The Wiggles were Australia's highest earning entertainers, grossing in more than AC/DC and Nicole Kidman put together.
Formation of the Band
Two of the band’s members Anthony Field and Jeff Fatt were previously members of a popular pub rock band in Australia called the Cockroaches. The Cockroaches had scored a number of top 40 hits in Australia during the 1980s and had toured regularly throughout Australia.
When the Cockroaches broke up in 1988, Field enrolled at the Institute of Early Childhood Studies at Macquarie University in Sydney. The program was dominated by females and Anthony Field, Greg Page and Murray Cook were the only few men enrolled in the study. Both Greg Page and Murray Cook were also musicians. Page, the youngest of the group, had joined the program straight after high school and Cook had previously played bass for a small time pop band in Sydney called Finger Guns. The three began writing children’s songs as part of a course project at the university. They also enlisted the help of Jeff Fatt who had previously played in the Cockroaches with Field. By the end of the project, the group had a demo tape which they took to ABC music (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), who released a self-titled album for the band in 1991. The album has since achieved Gold and Platinum status.
The Wiggles’ Success
The Wiggles became an instant success amongst young audiences and found themselves in regular demand. They first began playing live at pre-schools and childcare centers and gained immense popularity as performers for fund raising events. The band also gained exposure and honed their performance through occasional busking around Sydney.
With the success of their first self-titled album, the Wiggles were in popular demand throughout the rest of the 1990s and were busy recording, touring and releasing multiple albums, videos and making live concert performances to larger and larger crowds across Australia and New Zealand. Their continued alliance with ABC led them to make a successful children’s’ television series of the Wiggles, with a number of new characters and a television persona for each band member. Murray wears red and loves playing the guitar; Anthony wears blue and loves food; Jeff wears purple and is always falling asleep and Greg wears yellow, loves to sing and drives the Big Red Car.
Greg Page leaves the group
In a summer tour in the US in 2006, lead singer and founding member Greg Page, also known as the yellow wiggle, collapsed during a show in Rhode Island. His ability to perform had also been affected previously due to vertigo, fainting, and loss of balance.
In November 2006, the band announced Greg’s departure due to his medical condition known as orthostatic intolerance, a chronic but not life-threatening condition that affects balance, breathing and coordination. Greg was replaced by Sam Moran who had already been an understudy for the Wiggles for the last five years and had stood in for Page countless times.
Wiggles Theme parks
2005 saw the opening of Wiggles World, a multi million dollar amusement park at the Dreamworld theme park in Queensland, Australia. Following the huge success of the park in Australia, the Six Flags Great America theme park in Illinois, Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey and Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts had scheduled the opening of “Wiggles World”, (a new area of the park featuring Wiggles-themed rides and other attractions designed for younger children) in May 2007. Six Flags plans to add Wiggles Worlds to its other theme parks across the US, over the next five years.
Characters
Many additional characters have been featured in Wiggles videos and television series.
One such character is the ‘Cook’ who was originally played by Field’s late father and then played by late Crowded House drummer, Paul Hester. The death of both actors has earned the character the appellation of “The Wiggles Death Curse”. Another character is ‘Wally the Magician’ featured in The Wiggles Movie in which Wally a struggling magician eventually realizes his dream after winning a magic competition.
Awards
In 2005, the Wiggles were recognized as Australia's "Exporter of the Year" for their highest earnings in entertainment. It was the first time entertainers had ever won Australia's Exporter of the Year award. In April 2006, The Wiggles were awarded the Australian Catholic University’s highest honor, Doctor of the University – ‘Honoris Causa’ in recognition of the band’s outstanding contribution to young children’s early development and education through the performing arts.
The Wiggles continue to donate their time and money for charitable events and routinely sponsor groups of disabled children to attend their concerts.
