The founding of Whiskeytown saw Adams move to alt-country, describing punk rock as "too hard to sing" in the title track of Whiskeytown's debut album Faithless Street. Whiskeytown was heavily influenced by the country-rock pioneers, most notably Gram Parsons. Whiskeytown quickly gained critical acclaim with the release of their second full-length album and their first major label release, Stranger's Almanac.

Adams made his solo debut in 2000, with Heartbreaker. Emmylou Harris, who was originally Gram Parsons' singing partner, sang backup on "Oh My Sweet Carolina." Backing vocals and instruments were provided by Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and Kim Richey as Adams embraced a style more reminiscent of folk music. Although sales were slow, yet it had a considerable critical success.

With the intention to release in 2003, Adams worked on recording Love Is Hell during 2002 and 2003. Lost Highway was commercially not viable and leads Adams to go back to the studio. Two weeks later Lost Highway returned with Rock N Roll, which featured guest musicians including Melissa Auf der Maur, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, and Parker Posey. With the condition of splitting Love Is Hell in two installments, Adams and Lost Highway eventually established that the label would release Rock N Roll as well. Pt. 1 of both the albums was released in November 2003, followed by Love Is Hell, Pt. 2 in December. Both albums were critically acclaimed thus in May 2004 Love Is Hell was re-released as a full-length album.

In early 2006 during a solo tour of the United Kingdom, with the company of Brad Pemberton who was the drummer for The Cardinals, and on the final date in London by Neal Casal. With a performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Adams then toured the United States with The Cardinals. Adams and The Cardinals then returned to the UK for a summer tour of Europe. Adams produced Willie Nelson's album Songbird that released in October, 2006, while performing as backing band along with The Cardinals. Adding 18 albums on his website under various pseudonyms that featured humorous and nonsensical lyrics, late in 2006, Adams experimented with hip hop music.

Adams who was born in November 5, 1974, on his journey in life suffered at the hands of fate. In 2007, Adams revealed that he endured "an extended period of substance abuse" that ended in 2006. "Substance abuse" was the routinely induction of snorted heroin mixed with cocaine, and abused alcohol and pills. Adams overcame his addiction with the positive and extensive assistance of girlfriend Jessica Joffe who advised and took personal interest in going for the Valium therapy and attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous.
