George Roger Waters is an English rock musician; singer, guitarist, bassist, songwriter, and composer.
From 1965 to 1985, He enjoyed his long music career with the band Pink Floyd as their main songwriter, bass player and one of their vocalists. Roger was indeed a music genius. He was also the mastermind behind the majority of the band's songs, concept albums and many of Pink Floyd's symbols including the Pink Floyd Pigs and the marching hammers.
Following this, a moderately successful solo career was also started by Roger Waters. Three studio albums were released by him. He also has the honor of staging one of the largest concerts ever, The Wall Concert in Berlin in 1990. He released an opera, Ça Ira in 2005. Later on, he joined Pink Floyd at the Live 8 concert in London, on July 2, for their first public performance with Waters in 24 years.
Biography
(1943-1965) Early years
Waters was born George Roger Waters in Great Bookham, Surrey near Leatherhead on September 6, 1943. He grew up in Cambridge. While Waters was only five months old, his father Eric Fletcher Waters died while fighting in World War II at Anzio in 1944. Waters would refer or allude to the loss of his father throughout his work, especially on The Final Cut album from 1983 ((which is dedicated to his father)
(1965-1985) Pink Floyd years
Roger Waters was successful in founding Pink Floyd in 1965. He was supported by Syd Barrett, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Initially, most of the songwriting for the band was done by Barrett. However, On their debut LP, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the song "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" was written by Waters.
(1985-2002) Solo years
Waters embarked on a solo career after his departure from Pink Floyd. Three concept albums and a movie soundtrack was produced by Waters. His solo works were proved to be very much successful. The sales were not impressive. However, His solo work has managed critical acclaim and even some comparison to previous work with Pink Floyd.
“1984's The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking”, was his first truly solo album. It was a wonderful project about a man's dreams in a night. The legendary guitarist Eric Clapton and jazz saxophonist David Sanborn were the leading musicians who helped Waters during recording.
(2002-Present) Solo years, continued
In 2002, Waters enjoyed performing at a concert organized by the Countryside Alliance. Waters has the honor of playing many classic Pink Floyd songs at the Glastonbury Festival in June of 2002.
A special speaker system had been set up among the audience for the first time to enable sound effects to appear to be moving around amongst the crowd.
In mid-2004, Miramax Films made an announcement of production of The Wall was to appear on Broadway. Waters would play a prominent part in its production. The musical contained not only the original tracks from The Wall, but also songs from Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and other Pink Floyd albums, as well as new material.
On occasion of the Welcome Europe celebrations in the accession country of Malta, the overture for Ça Ira was pre-premièred on the night of 1 May 2004. It was performed over Grand Harbour in Valletta and illuminated by light artist Gert Hof. This special event was broadcast over all EBU television stations.
In 2007, Roger Waters is performing on his Dark Side Of The Moon Live tour at Equity Members Stadium, Perth, Australia.
Hits and awards
Waters' solo singles have become very popular and have seen chart activity. "What God Wants, Pt. 1", is the most popular single. It reached #4 in the UK despite a radio ban. His three major solo albums have been acclaimed Gold by the RIAA. On both the UK and U.S. Classical Charts, his opera Ça Ira reached #1.
Roger has also the honor of been inducted into the U.S. and UK Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd. He was rewarded with a "Media Event of the Year" award for mounting The Wall Live in Berlin.
