Rascal Flatts is an American country pop band. Known for their slick-sounding singles and appealing to a more youthful demographic, Rascal Flatts feature Gary LeVox (born July 10, 1970), Jay DeMarcus (born April 26, 1971) and Joe Don Rooney (born Sept. 13, 1975).
Rascal Flatts has been successful in entering elite territory by any measure. They have established themselves as country music's premiere young headliners in their brilliant career of six years. They have been taken repeatedly to the top of the charts due to their hits like "These Days," "I'm Movin' On," "I Melt," "Bless The Broken Road," and "What Hurts the Most". The first album of the band was released in 2000.Four full length albums as well as a live album have been released by Rascal Flatts to date. The group was also on the soundtrack for the Disney movie Cars singing "Life is a Highway".
History
A native of Columbus, Ohio, DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992 to find work as a musician. In 1997, he was successful in convincing his second cousin LeVox, also of Columbus, to come to Nashville to pursue a career as a singer. DeMarcus happened to meet Joe Don Rooney, a native of Picher, Okla., when they both got jobs in Chely Wright's band. Meanwhile, DeMarcus and LeVox were gigging in a Nashville bar with a part-time guitarist. Rooney was invited by Demarcus to play guitar for them when their guitarist couldn't make it to a show one weekend.Some demos were recorded by them and ultimately the were signed with a Disney imprint, Lyric Street.
Three of their glossy, pop flavored songs reached Top 10 in early 2000. These hit songs were "Prayin' for Daylight," "This Everyday Love" and "While You Loved Me." The trio proved to be the best sellers.
More than 500,000 albums were sold by them. A late-blooming fourth single, "I'm Movin' On," reached a more mature audience. It successfully moved their self-titled debut album to platinum status.
"These Days," the first single from their 2002 album Melt, hit No. 1. The CMA Horizon Award in 2002 was won by them. Later on, they toured heavily with Toby Keith. In 2003, they were successful in winning their first Vocal Group of the Year award from the CMA.
"I Melt" controversy
In 2003, their music video for the single "I Melt" brought notoriety for Rascal Flatss. The video was greatly objected by some fans due to its brief nudity. The fans even demanded the video to be banned
from CMT and Great American Country. Eventually, an edited version of the video was released after removing the inappropriate parts.
The follow-up single, "Mayberry," reached No. 1 in 2004.
In early 2005, the band's album Feels Like Today picked up steam, due to the single, "Bless the Broken Road," . It remained on the No. 1 spot on Billboard's country airplay chart for five weeks. The song also won a Grammy for country song, an award given to the songwriters.
Feels Like Today proved to be the top-selling country album of 2005. The hits "Skin (Sarabeth)" and "Fast Cars and Freedom” were included in this remarkable album.
In 2006, "Me and My Gang" was released by trio. It was played for more than a million fans on their tour. "What Hurts the Most," the title track and "I Wish." were the hits from the album.They also had a country hit with "Life Is a Highway," from the animated movie, Cars. Winning their fourth CMA vocal group award in 2006 was another feather in their cap.
