Portishead Tickets Information
Portishead is an English band based in Bristol and was formed in the year 1991. The music group has been given the same name as of a town nearby, 8 miles in the west of Bristol. The band has three regular members, Adrian Utley, Geoff Barrow and Beth Gibbons as well as an on and off member, Dave Donald .
Portishead is one of those bands which helped to bring forth the trip-hop genre of music and made it popular among the masses, predominantly in America. The group took inspiration from the slow and elastic beats that were a huge part of the band Massive Attack’s Blue Lines and to it they added other elements such as acid house and cool jazz along with soundtrack music. By doing all this Portishead was able to create music which was full of character, moody, distinctive and had a beguilingly dark and alluring sound.
The band was very well known for its suggestive pseudo-cabaret pop songs that threatened and weakened the traditional structures of the previous groups with their experimental rhythms and productions of the trip-hop genre. And because of this fusion of unique music Portishead was able to achieve something that other trip-hop bands were unable to. They achieved success among the masses, they appealed to all kinds of music fans and not just those who were interested in alternative rock or electronic dance. Even before the band had released any album, it was an astonishing hit in UK and was already topping all kinds of year-end polls by critics along with being given the much esteemed Mercury Music Prize . Portishead was already an underground success and had sold more than 150,000 copies. Then in the year 1994, the group’s first ever album titled “Dummy” debuted.
At this time around, the band consisted of only two members, Beth Gibbons and Geoff Barrow , while Adrian Utley during that time worked as a co-producer on the album, before he joined the band officially after the album had released. Their album garnered success both in America as well as in Europe, selling 150,000 copies and more in USA. Three of the albums singles titled “Glory Box”, “Numb” and “Sour Times” were released and were successful. It was also ranked in Rolling Stones Magazine’s list of ‘500 Greatest Albums of all times’.
Portishead released another album after a break of about three years. This album was given the same title as the name of the band and was released in the year 1997. The first single from the album, “All Mine” was able to reach the Top Ten in UK. Then in 2008, the band came up with its third album on the 28 th of April, called “Third”. Portishead has also toured extensively over the years and has performed several live concerts, sometimes to support certain causes.
After the release of their first album, the band toured all over America to promote it. The band performed at the Roseland Ballroom in New York in the year 1997. Then in the month of February, in 2005, the band returned after a hiatus of about seven years and performed live for the Tsunami Benefit Concert , which took place in Bristol, in order to raise funds for the victims of the huge natural disaster.
Portishead, in order to promote their third album, toured all over Europe and was given the honor of being the headlining band at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on the 26 th of April, in 2008. This year, that is 2011, Portishead has been listed as one of the bands to perform at several festivals all over the world, including 2011 Benicàssim Festival, Slovakia’s Pohoda Festival, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, Rock Werchter in Belgium and the Paleo Festival in Switzerland. The band has already performed live on the 15 th of July, 2011, at the Super Bock Super Rock Music Festival , alongside other bands, including ‘The Strokes’, ‘Arctic Monkeys’ and ‘Arcade Fire’. Now Portishead has made the announcement about their plans to tour the whole of North America. This will be the band’s first full tour of this part of the country in the past ten years. The band will be creating its magic in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Seattle, Chicago, Vancouver, Montreal, Denver and Berkeley in the month of October, 2011.
