The first edition of the show, held in 1959, lasted for three days. The success of the festival could easily be measured by 68,000 fans who attended the festival to make it a success. It became the first indoor Jazz festival in the history to attract that much attention. After being held in 1959, the festival didn’t take place up until 1979, the year that also marked the 25 th anniversary of Playboy as well. So in order to celebrate that along with the Jazz music, the festival returned once again and this time it was held at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Ever since then, the event has been regularly staged at the Hollywood Bowl. The amount of audience and attention that the show gather there in West Coast, surpassed any other jazz event that was held their previously. After it became a phenomenal hit, Hefner decided to make the festival, an annual thing.

In 1980, Records broke once again as Playboy Jazz Festival managed to break all the previous attendance records for any Jazz event held at the Hollywood Bowl. The festival lasted for two days, and it was sold out in advance. The following year the event sold out a week before the event, and it turned out to be the largest jazz music festival ever. With time, Festival’s reputation grew only bigger, and in 1981, Playboy Jazz Festival gathered $40,000 of the South Bay Cancer Foundation and Salvation Army.

In 1985 the festival clinched its third consecutive MAGGIE Award for the category of Editorial Excellence that was awarded by Western Publishing Association. Also in the same year, it also broke the attendance records at the Hollywood Bowl. The year 1988 marked the 10 th anniversary of the festival as well as the 35 th anniversary of Playboy as well. The event’s tickets sold out almost six weeks before the event that year. In 1989 Playboy Jazz Festival continued its tradition of welcoming the finest Jazz acts from all the across the nation. The show featured acts like Dianne Reeves, Take 6, Larry Carlton, and the Terry Gibb Dream Band. In 1991, the festival took a new initiative as it went international by holding two concerts in Japan. In 1993, Playboy Jazz Festival’s stage welcomed yet another renowned figure from the Jazz Music Scene, Al Jarreau. This multiple times Grammy Award winner won the hearts of many with his heart touching vocals, at the Hollywood Bowl.

Playboy Jazz Festival went on road for the first time in 1994, when five stops were made in different cities in United States. Featuring some of the finest Jazz acts, several mini festivals were performed in those cities. The 2000 version of the festival featured Lou Rawls performing the closing set at the Festival. With the hits like You’ll Never Find Another Love and Groovy People, Rawls completely mesmerized the audiences that night. In 2010 three more acts made their debut at the Festival. Those musicians included Trombone Shorty, Jake Shimabukuro and Naturally 7. Even this year, the festival would be no less entertaining as it has been always.
