He released his debut album World from a Side of the Moon the same year which went gold in both, United States and Canada, while his single Home from the release went multi-platinum in the U.S. and gold in New Zealand. While the album took some of the highest places on Canadian and U.S. charts alongside being among the top hundred in Australia; its single topped charts in the US while being popular elsewhere. Phillip Phillips has been playing music since he was fourteen. In 2009, the young artist founded the Phillip Phillips Band alongside his brother-in-laws Benjamin Neil and Todd Urick and started playing in many different local events and venues. In 2010, he won the local singing competition Albany Star. At the time he quoted among his favorite singers names like John Butler, Jonny Lang, Tool, Mumford & Sons, Damien Rice and Dave Matthews. Before going on American Idol, he had also auditioned on America’s Got Talent during its second season, but was unable to reach the finals. On Idol, he set a new record for being the only contestant who did not have to face possible elimination through any part of the competition, and in the finale, he gained the winner title against Jessica Sanchez. He won with a record-breaking sum of a hundred and thirty-two million votes cast for him. Soon after, his coronation song was issued, setting yet another record for having the most number of digital sales in a week for any coronation songs by Idol winners.  
After winning Idol, Phillip Phillips went on the competition’s Live Tour, along with the remaining top ten contestants of the season. He sang the National Anthem at the 2012 World Series’ opening game and a month later became part of a money raising concert with PS22 chorus for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. At the year’s end he performed at the festive National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. His coronation song was a huge success, recording sales of more than four million copies in the US, alongside which it was also used in Olympics coverage by NBC, film trailers, TV shows and commercials. He played the song on A Capitol 4th on PBS’s Independence Day celebration special. He also made an appearance at the eighty-third MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City where he performed the Home yet again. The same year he joined the One World Concert alongside several other musicians, to honor Dalai Lama in Syracuse University. He then sang the song on CNN Heroes special, as well as CBS’s Home for the Holidays.
He released his first album in November 2012, produced by Gregg Wattenberg, comprising of a majority of songs that Phillips had either written or co-written. At the start of 2013, the artist went on a tour with Matchbox Twenty across North America as their opening act. During this time he performed acoustic shows in ten colleges with a four-piece band, following which he took another college tour with an electric group. The same year, he also toured as the opening act for John Mayor on his Born and Raised Tour. In 2012, Phillip Phillips received nominations from Teen Choice Awards in the categories of Choice Love Song for Home and Choice Music: Breakout Artist. The next year he was nominated by World Music Awards for World’s Best Song and World’s Best Male Artist alongside receiving nominations from Billboard Music Awards for Top Rock Song and Top Rock Album.
