Nightwish is a symphonic power metal band in Finland. It was created in 1996 in Kitee. Nightwish is thought to be one of the bands responsible for the increasingly popular symphonic metal sound during the latter 1990s. Nightwish is recognized for their international hits "Wish I Had an Angel", "Nemo" and "Sleeping Sun".

Nightwish has been well known in their own country. However, they did not gain international recognition immediately. Their first single, "The Carpenter", was the one that earned them recognition at home. The albums that gained them international fame include Oceanborn [1998] and Wishmaster [2000].

After their 2004 album, Once, Nightwish had their video clips shown on MTV in the U. S. Their music was also included in U.S. movie soundtracks. "Wish I Had an Angel" (2004) was their greatest U.S hit single. This number made it as two U.S. film soundtracks. This helped the band to promote their intended North American tour. After this, Nightwish made 3 more singles and 2 music videos for their album.

Nightwish was formed in 1996. It was Tuomas Holopainen’s brainchild, and the idea of the band came to Holopainen after a night with friends around a campfire. Holopainen called in guitarist Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen, who was quite a new acquaintance. He also called in vocalist Tarja Turunen, who had a great reputation for her vocal skills. In the beginning of 1997, drummer Jukka Nevalainen also joined the band. The band switched its acoustic guitar for an electric guitar. Brining in a drummer and changing the guitars was part of Holopainen's idea of transforming Nightwish's original style. This began their metal style that Nightwish is well known for today.

Nighwish also added on a bassist in 1998. Bassist Sami Vänskä was an old friend of Holopainen. Oceanborn was successor to Angels Fall First. It was released after the ‘Carpenter’ video was launched. Oceanborn is said to be more technical than their previous releases. In this album, Tapio Wilska (ex-Finntroll) in two of the songs, "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" and "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean". This inclusion means a lot to Nightwish because it was their first result of a guest vocalist. The album managedto climb to number 5 on the Finnish album charts. The first single, Sacrament of Wilderness, from this album was a number one hit.

Nightwish recorded their 6th full-length studio album in 2006. It is called Dark Passion Play. The recording began with work being carried out on recording the drums first. The guitars were then worked on, and then the bass and the demo keyboards were brought in. The orchestral and choir recordings were conducted in Abbey Road Studios. After all this, the vocals and synthesizers were recorded.

In order to fulfill the vacant slot for vocalist, the band allowed interested people to send in their demo tapes. This was announced on March 17, 2006. Beyond this, there was much speculation as to who would permanently replace the band’s vocalist. The band announced that only their website would announce who will be added as a replacement for the vocals.
