Michael McDonald was born on February 12, 1952. e is an American R&B/soul singer from St. Louis, Missouri. Michael McDonald is well known for his physical attractiveness and striking blue eyes, because of which he is sometimes called a "blue-eyed soul" singer. His trademark, however, his husky baritone voice.
McDonald performed in several local bands. Some of these included Jerry Jay and the Sheratons, Mike and the Majestics, the Reebtoors, and The Guild. During this time, Michael McDonald attended McCluer High School.
Michael McDonald was 'discovered' when he performed with a group known as Blue. When this happened, he moved to Los Angeles [1970]. He received a lot of attention as an additional member of the group, Steely Dan. In other words, Michael provided back-up vocals for the 1975 Katy Lied tracks.
Michale McDonald returned with subsequent albums including one from 1976, The Royal Scam. Withthis release, Michael also revealed his talent on the keyboards. He carried on doing background vocals for Steely Dan right up till they released Gaucho in 1980.
McDonald was also sought after by The Doobie Brothers in April 1975. This was at the time when their lead singer Tommy Johnston fell ill on a national tour. When he joined them, he recorded some of his best songs. These included "Takin' It To The Streets", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Minute by Minute", "Little Darling", and "What a Fool Believes".
After performing and recording with the Doobies, Michael McDonald carried on with a very successful solo career.
Michael McDonald has produced and/or appeared on releases recorded by various artists. He has also recorded with his singer wife, Amy Holland, and also with Grammy winner, Christopher Cross.
Michael McDonald also provided back up vocals for Bonnie Raitt's album, Sweet Forgiveness [1977]. His vocals are on the songs, "Runaway", "Gamblin Man", "Sweet Forgiveness", and "Two Lives".
Michael McDonald co-founded a small independent recording label called, Ramp Records, alongside studio designer, Chris Pelonis, and actor, Jeff Bridges.
McDonald has reunited and performed as a guest with the Doobies many times. However, he carries on his solo career with a series of tribute albums dedicated to the Motown sound. One example of this has been his Motown Records album Motown [2003]. For this, McDonald won two Grammy nominations.
In 2003, Michael McDonald was part of an ad campaign for MCI. A taped concert of McDonald was used as a joke in The 40-Year-Old Virgin [2005].
2003 was a significant year for Michael McDonald because he also received a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
In 2006, together with Steely Dan, McDonald toured during the summer. This was the first time they did so since 1974. McDonald opened his concerts with his own set. In the latter half of his performances, he would join them with the Steely Dan set in a truly historic manner.
