Gerald MaxwellRivera was born on May 23, 1973. He had his origin from Brooklyn, New York, United States. As a singer and song writer he has worked in the genres of music like R&B, soul, neo soul, quiet storm, funk and jazz. Apart from his vocals he works on piano, guitar and moog. Since the beginning of his career in 1994 he has also produced some songs. He has worked with Columbia Records so far.
At the age of 37, he is one of the artists that have played a vital role in bringing to forefront, ‘soul & neo soul’ genres of music. Maxwell started his career in early 1990’s when he recorded his debut album ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hand Suite’ on Columbia Records with the collaboration of song writer Leon Ware and guitarist Wah Wah Watson. The album was released in 1996 as Columbia Records stored it in shelves for two long years having the doubt at the potential of the album.
Initially, the doubts of the record company were seen through the low response of the audiences but when the second single, ‘Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)’ of the album was released, it readily became a hit. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award while it earned the status of 2X platinum selling its 2,000,000 copies. In 1997, Maxwell released an EP containing seven songs. The idea came while he performed on June 15, in an episode of MTV Unplugged in New York. Though the idea was to release an album but the record company settled on an EP. During the episode Maxwell performed some of his songs along with ‘This Woman’s Work’ by Kate Blush and ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails.
‘Embrya’ was Maxwell’s second studio album that was released in the year 1998. In 1999 Maxwell released a song, “Fortunate’ written by R. Kelly featured as a soundtrack for the movie ‘Life’. It reached at number one spot on Billboard magazine’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart. Fortunately ‘Fortunate’ is Maxwell’s best single as it stood unbeaten on number one R&B single spot in 1999. After a gap of two years Maxwell released his third album in the year 2001. The album was a success as it stood at number on position on both Billboard 200 album chart and Billboard’s R&B album chart. ‘Lifetime’ was one of the hit singles of the album. In October 2006 he added a song, ‘Seguranca (Security)’ to the AIDS- Benefit Album ‘Red Hot + Rio’. In 2008 during BET Awards function he performed the song ‘Simply Beautiful’ as a tribute to Al Green.
For a while Maxwell disappeared from the music scene, according to him to prepare himself for the competition in music industry. On July 7, 2009 he released his new album ‘BLACKsummers’night’. The album instantly gained the number one spot on Billboard Album Top 200 chart. The single ‘Pretty Wings’ which he performed on Tom Joyner Morning Show in April of 2009, became a hit. He also performed it at 2009 BET Awards. Another single ‘Bad Habits’ became his first UK single of the album. In October of same year he had his autumn European tour in London and Manchester.
During his career, Maxwell has received a number of awards and nominations. In his debut year that is 1996 he won Best R&B/Soul Single Male for ‘Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)’, Best R&B/Soul Album, Male for his album ‘Maxwell’s Urban hang Suite’ and Best R&B/soul or Rap New artist at Soul Train Awards. In 1997 and 1998 he was nominated for Best R&B Album for ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’ and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for ‘Whenever, Wherever Whatever’ respectively in Grammy Awards. In 1999 he was nominated as and for both Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for ‘Matrimony: Maybe You’ and Best R&B Album for ‘Embrya’ at Grammy Awards. His single ‘Fortunate’ was nominated in Blockbuster Entertainment Awards and stood a winner as R&B Single of the Year at Billboard Music Awards in the same year.
Maxwell stood tall in his career as he won two Soul Train Awards; one for Best R&B/Soul Single Male for his song ‘Fortunate’ in 2000 and the other for Best Male Artist B&B/Soul in 2009, one Image Award for Outstanding Male Artist in 2010 and two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album: ‘BLACKsummers’night’ and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for ‘Pretty Wings’. Apart from all the winnings he has been nominated in different categories for the A category awards of the region, as in 2009 he was nominated for the Best Musical Act in Alma Awards and for Favorite Male R&B/Soul Artist in American Music Awards and in 2010 he was nominated in six different categories at Grammy Awards . He has also been nominated for Image Awards.
