The histories of music have seen some of the biggest and most legendary performers step up to the plate and stamp their authority on the industry for generations to come. One name that ranks right at the top of that list is Mark Knopfler. He is a performer who has been at the forefront of the industry for decades and still is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Mark Knopfler was born on 12th August, 1949. He was a music fanatic from a very early age. He listened to Elvis Presley while growing up and joined up with different groups at school level during the 1960’s. He appeared on television for the first time when he was just sixteen years old with his friend Sue Hercombe as one half of a harmonic duo. He moved from his native Scotland to Leeds, England in 1968 and recorded a disk of his song “Summer’s Coming My Way” two years later. Mark then moved to London in 1973 after graduating from the University of Leeds. He became a member of a group called Brewers Droop and worked on their album The Booze Brothers. He spent the next three years performing locally at pubs in and around London while also working as an instructor at the Loughton College.
It was during the middle of the 1970’s that Mark Knopfler teamed up with his brother David Knopfler and his friend John Illsley to play together. They named themselves Dire Straits and went on to record demo tapes that contained songs like “Wild West End”, “Sacred Loving”, “Sultans of Swing”, “Down to the Waterline”, “Water of Love”, “Real Girl” and “East bound Train”. A lot of these tracks ended up on their self-titled album released in the year 1978. “Sultans of Swing” went to the top five in U.S. and captured the eighth spot in Britain. Summer of the next year saw the release of their next album titled Communiqué which went to the top spot in France. Their third album Making Moves came out on 17th October, 1980 to a lot of critical acclaim. It was a huge hit that sold just fewer than four million copies in Europe.
It was their album Brothers in Arms that really gave Dire Straits the kind of acclaim their talents deserved. With Mark Knopfler pulling the strings, it hit the music stores in May, 1985 and became an instant hit. The album turned out to be a rage all over the globe and went on to sell a whooping thirty millions copies around the world. An epic tour to various parts of the world followed where the group played over two hundred and thirty concerts. The group went on a bit of hiatus after that and Mark Knopfler started to work on soundtracks of various movies. Dire Straits made their comeback by teaming up with Eric Clapton on 11th June as part of Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday celebrations at Wembley. Their next album was a collection of their greatest hits titled Money for Nothing and it went to the top spot in the UK. The next album was titled On Every Street. It was the last album by the band because shortly afterwards they broke up and Mark went solo.
Mark Knopfler made his solo debut with Golden Heart which was released in the year 1996. His next album was titled Sailing to Philadelphia and it came out on 26th September, 2000. It turned out to be a huge hit that sold over three and a half million copies in the first two years alone. Then came his next two albums The Ragpicker’s Dream and Shangri-La in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Both releases charted in various countries around the world to keep Mark’s legacy growing.
Kill to Get Crimson, Get Lucky and more recently Privateering came after that to cement his status among the greatest artists of all time. Mark Knopfler has won the biggest awards in the business including multiple Brit Awards and four Grammys. The list of hits and all the accolades that he has received over the course of his illustrious career put him right up there in very special company.
