The band hails from New York City and presently consists of musicians Cheryl Bentyne, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Tim Hauser. Hauser is the only one who has been with the band since day one. Named after Manhattan Transfer , a novel by John Dos Passos, the band came into being in 1969. The title of the novel was adopted by the band members since it suited their New York roots. Their potential for making great music was soon discovered by the Capitol Records and the band signed up with it. They released their debut album, Jukin’ , in 1971. The same album due to its commercial success in the U.S. was later released in the UK under the title, The Manhattan Transfer and Gene Pistilli . It did well in the UK as well, earning the band an army of fans. Critics also raved about their debut album. Unfortunately, while the band was doing great professionally, the members fell apart due to different musical preferences and the band was disbanded.
The Manhattan Transfer had a second reincarnation however in 1973. Tim Hauser was the one who got together with some other great musicians and revived the band. Soon they were on the road again, winning even more fans and earning great reviews from the critics. It didn’t take the Atlantic Records too long to offer them a contract and they released their new self-titled album soon after. This album was beyond every ones expectations and reached the top of the charts both in the U.S. and UK. One of the songs from the album “Operator” became talk of the town. The band went on to release Pastiche , Coming Out and The Manhattan Transfer Live . All the three albums did extremely well and won them cult-like following. The Manhattan Transfer Live reached the UK Top 5.
The band’s first Grammy came with the release of Extensions . It had hit numbers both in pop and jazz categories. Surely, you remember “Trickle, Trickle” and disco hit “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone”! The album had another number, “Birdland”. It became the best jazz number of 1980. The year 1981, however, proved even better for the musicians. They became the first ever band to win a Grammy in both the jazz and popular categories. Their album Mecca for Moderns with unforgettable number “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)” was a stupendous hit. The new year brought another Grammy Award for the group for “Route 66”. It became so famous that it was featured in Burt Reynolds Sharky’s Machine .
More recently, the Manhattan Transfer paid tribute to legendary Chick Corea, a famous American jazz musician in their latest album, The Chick Corea Songbook . Corea himself features on one of the tracks. The band collaborated with other notable musicians like Christian McBride, Jimmy Earl, Alex Acuna, Steve Hass, Scott Kinsey, and Airto Moreira, on this album. With such great musicians with diverse musical roots, the album was bound to earn raving reviews from fans and critics alike!
