The man behind the immensely popular song ‘Truly’, Richie has been contributing hits to the music industry since 1967. At first he worked with the band Commodores up till 1982 under the label of Motown Records. After 14 years of being a band member, Richie started off his solo music career in 1982 in which he was equally successful. Moreover, Richie does not only stick to one particular genre of music but makes music on a wide variety of them. From R&B to soul to rock to country to pop rock to pop, the maestro has given timeless hits of all of them. The 64 year old artist is as good as ever to this day and his concerts are one of the most energetic and entertaining ones you will ever get to see.
As a part of Commodores, Richie was the singer, songwriter and saxophonist of the band. Initially the group produced light funky music such as ‘Machine Gun’ and ‘Brick House’. But with time Richie wrote more romantic tracks like ‘Easy’, ‘Sail On’, ‘Three Times A Lady’ and ‘Still’ as the maturity of his age started reflecting in his work. By the 1970s, not only was Lionel making music for the band but he had also begun to compose songs for other artists who requested for his assistance. In 1980 he composed ‘Lady’ for Kenny Rogers which went on to hit the number 1 position on charts and was also later covered by the Latin salsa romantica pioneer and jazz composer La Palabra who acquired international popularity by virtue of the song. Lionel later produced Kenny’s album ‘Share Your Love’ in the next year which also did fairly well in the market.
Moreover, in the year 1981 Lionel sang the theme song of the movie Endless Love in collaboration with Diana Ross. The song went viral and topped the pop music charts in several countries including the United States, Canada, U.K, Brazil, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. It received a Platinum certification and sold over 2 million records in the United States, becoming Motown’s greatest hit.
Endless Love gave Lionel the boost and encouragement that he needed to part his ways from Commodores and embark upon his own solo career. So in 1982, he left the band and released his first solo album Lionel Richie which contained the chart topper ‘Truly’ and the top five songs ‘My Love’ and ‘You Are’. Not only did the album sell about 4 million copies but it also secured the 3rd position on several music charts.
Furthermore, Richie’s second album which came out in 1983 Can’t Slow Down elevated him to greater heights of success. The album sold double the number of copies sold by the preceding album and also earned Richie two Grammy Awards. Receiving the ‘Album of The Year’ award at the Grammy’s impelled him to the top international superstars. The album’s number 1 hit single ‘All Night Long’ was later sung by Richie at the closing ceremony of the XXIII Olympic Games in LA.
At present, the star has over 11 studio albums and a lot of other chart topping singles. His most well-known works include ‘Hello’, ‘Running with the Night’, ‘Stuck on you’, ‘Say You, Say Me’ and ‘Penny Lover’ with ‘Say You, Say Me’ earning Richie an Oscar Award.
