Who would have thought that a sturdy martial artist with threatening dispositions of a champion fighter, ever ready to tear his opponents apart could be light-hearted, let alone a comic! Meet Joe Rogan – a taekwondo champion, TV commentator, that famous host of Fear Factor and above all, a surprisingly hilarious stand-up comedian.
Rogan, born in New Jersey, became obsessed with mixed martial arts (MMA) at the age of 13 and earned his black belt in Taekwondo at the age of 15. Following this, he became four-time Massachusetts state champion and won US Open Taekwondo Championship at the age of 19. In 1996, he started his training for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually earning his brown belt. Even with his successes in Taekwondo, his real career breakthrough came in 1995 when he was cast as Joe Garrelli in situation comedy ‘NewsRadio’ which aired on NBC. Rogan appeared in 91 episodes of the show during 1995 to 1999. During the same time, Rogan started appearing on UFC 12 as an interviewer and later as a ring side commentator. Following the success of ‘NewsRadio’ , Joe Rogan was selected to host NBC’s reality show ‘Fear Factor’ in 2001. He went on to host all 6 seasons of the show before it was cancelled in 2006.
With all the in-ring heroics, reality show hosting and acting – Rogan’s real talent, according to him, is comedy. He has been doing standup comedy routines for about 20 years perfecting his unique speculative, thoughtful and immensely vivid comic style. He has been a star performer in esteemed Just For Laughs Festival and appeared in various guest shows including ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,’ ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’ and ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live.’
Rogan released his debut comedy album ‘I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday’ on Warner Bros Records in 2000. The following year, a DVD was released titled ‘Joe Rogan – Live from the Belly of the Beast.’ This work was followed by ‘Shiny Happy Jihad’ on Comedy Central Records in 2007. Later same year, Joe Rogan released his debut DVD ‘Joe Rogan Live’ which was aired on Showtime.
Rogan has a comic but insightful way of presenting the reality around us. Most of his comic motifs surround the mental deterioration in American society, the use of cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms, and DMT. He touches upon the enormity of space, the complexity of relationships, and the realization that there are no real grownups; he seems to be representing the audience's unconscious in a more clever but funny way.
