Ian has remained the band leader ever since its inception, and was the founder of the band. He stepped into professional singing after making a band in 1962 named The Blades , where he played flute along with bassist Jeffrey Hammond , drummer John Evans , and Michael Stephens or Hipgrave on guitars. Later on, Evans switched to piano from drums, and Barrie Barlow was hired as the new drummer for the band. The band was renamed as the John Evan band . The band later on moved to Luton , London but had to move back as they could not survive there owing to the shortage of finances. In the upcoming years they had to move from one city to another to manage their finances, but the band could never actually get a hit to get them on to the mainstream.
The band once again moved to Luton later, where they reorganized the band and also renamed it to Jethro Tull band. The name was inspired by a 16 th century agriculturist, and the first time they used the name, the response was great, so they decided to continue with the name Jethro Tull. The new name proved to be a good omen for the band, as its popularity graph started getting higher and higher with every released song. This Was was the first album the band released in 1968, and had some success on music charts. The music in This Was is considered to be more of progressive blues with a little tinge of jazz music.
Towards the early 1970s, the band reorganized its singing style, and its music appeared to be drifting a little more towards progressive rock. It was that time when Martin Barre joined the band and his excellent guitar work became an asset for the band’s music. Martin Barre was with Noel Redding in his band Fat Mattress at that time before joining Jethro Tull. The band produced some great hits during 1970s, and began being considered among the most celebrated rock bands in the industry at that time soon.
Jehtro Tull’s music seems to have evolved through different times, being more blues and jazz oriented initially and drifting towards progressive rock later, then folk rock, electronic rock and hard rock and recently taking influences from different types of music in the world.
The band has always been a greatly appreciated entertainer, but its live performances have been a specially acclaimed feature. Jethro Tull has always been full of talent and potential that shows in its albums and tracks, but its live performances are always considered simply mind blowing. The band has produced numerous albums ever since its inception, with some super hits including Stand Up, Aqualung , Thick as a Brick, War Child, Minstrel in the Gallery, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch, Original Masters, Catfish Rising and Living With The Past , released in 1969, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1985, 1991 and 2002 respectively.
