Gloria Estefan is a Cuban American singer and songwriter. She was born on September 1, 1957 with a name of Gloria María Fajardo. She has gained a title of "Queen of Latin Pop", she has the ranking in the top 100 of best selling music artists with over 90 million albums sold all over the world. There are 15.5 million copies sold alone at the United States. She has five Grammy Awards in her pocket and there are several number one hits, to her credit.
Estefan's father was a personal bodyguard to former Cuban president's wife in the 1950s. Later he was taken as prisoner under the Fidel Castro's regime. He was held as a political prisoner for 5 months, and joined his wife and daughter in Miami upon release. Gloria's mother, Gloria García Pérez de Fajardo, now living in Miami, ran a school in Cuba in the 1950s for kindergarten students.
Gloria was only 16 months old when she and her mother were forced to lead to Miami after the Cuban Revolution. She is very much against the communism, and often speaks about of her desire for a post-communist Cuba. She has the special honor to be the first pop star, invited by the pope to perform for the Pope, singing "Más Allá" as part of the celebration of Pope John Paul II's 50th anniversary in the priesthood.
Gloria had been raised in Miami and she had graduated from an all-girl Catholic high school. She has also attended the University of Miami, where as a student, she had worked as a Spanish and French translator at Miami International Airport's Customs Department. She graduated in 1978 with a degree in communications and psychology.
Estefan's had her first musical performance s at a large Cuban wedding when her future husband, Emilio Estefan, Jr. asked her to join what was then called "The Miami Latin Boys." With the addition of Estefan, the band's name was changed to Miami Sound Machine. MSM had released their first Epic Columbian album in 1984, named as ‘Eyes Of Innocence' which had the dance hit "Dr. Beat" as well as the ballad "I Need Your Love". Later they had succeeded in giving super hits ‘Primitive Love', being released in 1985.
Let It Loose, is a second album, which was released in 1987. It had received the multi-platinum title, with six million copies sold in the US. It featured the following hits: "Anything For You" ,"Betcha Say That" (#36 Popand other super hits. Estefan took top billing as the band's name changed to Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine. Later the band was dropped out and she was declared as a solo artist. In 1989, after the worldwide chart success of single "Anything for You", their Let it Loose album was repackaged as ‘Anything for You'.
In late 1989, she released her best-selling album to date, Cuts Both Ways. The album included the hit singles "Don't Wanna Lose You" (a Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit), "Oye mi Canto (Hear my Voice)", "Here We Are", "Cuts Both Ways" .While touring in support of Cuts Both Ways on March 20, 1990, near Scranton, Pennsylvania, Estefan was critically injured, suffering a fractured spine when a speeding semi-truck crashed into her tour bus.
Estefan had a return to the charts with a concept album, Into the Light in 1991. "Coming Out of the Dark" was performed publicly for the first time on the American Music Awards in January 1991, and it received a standing ovation as she took stage. The album reached at number five at the Billboard album chart, becoming on Gloria's highest debut and number two at the British albums chart.
