Crosby was born into a family of many talents. His father was Floyd Crosby who is an Oscar winning cinematographer. His older brother, Ethan Crosby is also a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. It was then customary that he would start to showcase his talents as well. He tried his luck in theatre, bagging a few shows here and there, but his lack of academic qualification would hold him back. He then went to theatre school but eventually started to lose interest. He then began to build a career in music. In the early 1960s, he put together a band consisting of Roger, Michael Clarke, Chris Hillman and Gene Clark. Their manager of the time had connections with Bob Dylan’s management. This is how they recorded their first demo, a cover of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man”. The demo was recorded on a 12-string guitar, which would go onto become the band’s signature sound. The sound is recreated in the Crosby concerts today. Having penned a majority of songs for the band, he plays them regularly as part of his shows. Followers of both “The Byrds” and the singer himself pool in to buy Crosby tickets. Unfortunately for the singer, though, his time with the band was short-lived as, following some tensions, he was fired from the group.
The next big project that Crosby was a part of was the famous “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young” band. The group was put together when he met another musician who was out of work. This man was Stephen Stills who then continued to jam with him for the next few months. Another unsuccessful musician, Graham Nash soon joined them. He had no luck whatsoever with his old band “The Hollies” and he was hoping to get some amount of commercial success with the two experienced musicians. Around 1969, the three started to perform together in front of crowds.
The same year, they released their self-titled record, “Crosby, Stills and Nash”. The album was very well received. It spawned two hit singles which became instant radio hits. This was also the time that disc jockeys were the entire vogue, and their album was the record of choice in most mixing parties and sessions. David Crosby wrote a lot of songs for this band as well. Amongst his hits were “Guinevere”, “Long Time Gone” and “Almost Cut My Hair”. Later on, the group was also joined by Neil Young.
Once his time with this band was done, he began to embark on his solo career. By 1971, he put out his first ever solo record, “If I Could Only Remember My Name”. By now, he had ample experience in the studio, but still had the help of other established artists. Old band members Neil Young and Nash made their contributions to his album along with Santana and the band, “The Grateful Dead”. As a solo performer, David Crosby initiated what began to be known as the “freak folk” genre.
In the entire course of his career, David Crosby has collaborated with a number of different artists. He has written and sang with the popular singer, Phill Collins, contributing to his albums and getting help for his own. He has also recorded a duet with Lucinda Williams. In recent years, he has teamed up with David Gillmour to produce more of his solo albums. But amongst his old band members, he has continued to work with Nash. It is their partnership which has proven to have the most longevity. The man is a true blue musician who has enjoyed more than 50 years of success.
