In the year 2010, the BPO went on its highly anticipated Florida Friends Tour in which the orchestra performed at various cities within the state under the leadership of JoAnn Falleta. Florida Friends Tour marked BPO’s first tour since 1988 in which they performed in more than one city. In 1988, the orchestra headed over to Europe to cover a number of cities on its performance schedule. Over the years, in addition to Kleinhans Music Hall, BPO has also made a number of appearances in other venues like Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, Place des Arts in Montreal, Davies Hall in San Francisco and Lincoln Center.
Buffalo Philharmonic has lustrous history of having some of the most renowned musicians as its musical directors. Among some of those top names are Julius Rudel, Josef Krips, Michael Tilson, Lukas Foss, Maximiano Valdes, William Steinberg and Semyon Bychkov. During its each annual season, Buffalo Philharmonic performs well over 120 concerts all across the region which range from Youth Concerts to Classics and Contemporary. Other than just giving live performances, the BPO has also taken the initiative of educating the youth and future generation with the true knowledge of music with its Education Programs. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra came into existence back in 1934 when it was founded by Samuel Capen, Frederick Slee, and Cameron Baird. In their honor, University of Buffalo has named its administration building after Capen and two of buildings of its Music Department after Slee and Baird. After its creation, Lajos Shuk took charge of it as its first music director as the Orchestra kicked off its debut season in 1935. After its construction, Kleinhans Hall opened its doors in 1947, and ever since then the Orchestra has been housed in there. During the time he was the music director of BPO, Lukas Foss took the orchestra to new heights of success and exposure. And it was during his tenure when the BPO rose to the ranks of being the top most orchestra which performs the Symphonic Music of 20th Century. Quite recently, JoAnn Falleta took charge of the orchestra as its new and first ever female music director. Over the years, the Orchestra has performed under the baton of many renowned conductors including Ralph Vaughn Williams, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Sir Neville Mariner and Igor Stravinsky. Presently the orchestra is conducted by Matthew Kraemer, who is its present resident conductor.
Under the leadership of its present music director JoAnn Falleta, the orchestra’s popularity as one of the finest orchestra’s in the world has been rekindled. It is during her tenure when the orchestra released its distinct repertoire in form of eleven new CDs. Among the repertoire featured on these CDs are BPO’s interpretation of Bob Dylan’s Seven Poems and Mr. Tambourine Man by John Corigliano which went on to win three Grammy Awards for the categories of Classical Contemporary Composition, and Classical Vocal Performance.
