An Icelandic singer/songwriter and composer, as well as an occasional actress, Bjork Guðmundsdóttir was born in November 21, 1965 in Reykjavík, Iceland. She is famous for her interest in many kinds of music including pop, alternative rock, jazz, ambient music, electronica, folk, and classical music. She has won numerous awards, 12 Grammy Award nominations and an Academy Award nomination. In 2003, her record label, One Little Indian, sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Her most recent album, Volta, released worldwide on 8 May 2007. She was ranked #36 on VH1's "The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll".

Björk's musical career began at the age of 11, with classical piano study in elementary school. One of her instructors sent a recording of Björk singing Tina Charles' song "I Love to Love" to RÚV, the only radio station than in Iceland. A representative of the record label Fálkinn contacted Björk to offer a record contract after hearing it. Several members of KUKL and the surrealist group Medusa got together to create the arts collective Smekkleysa (Bad Taste) in the summer of 1986. They created a musical division; a band called KUKL but soon renaming to The Sugarcubes. Smekkleysa and the Sugarcubes were officially started on the same day as the birth of Björk's son, Sindri

Mainstream success
The Sugarcubes:
The Sugarcubes' first single, "Ammæli" (Birthday), a surprise hit in the UK after being declared single of the week by Melody Maker. They were immediately signed up by One Little Indian. They gained a cult following in the US and UK, and calls from larger record companies started pouring in. They chose to remain with a friend's label, and even today, Björk remains on this label.

Solo career/Debut
In 1992 The Sugarcubes dissolved as conflicting ambitions split the band; they went into an indefinite hiatus to avoid risking their friendship. They still remain friends and are all still involved in the management of Smekkleysa/Bad Taste. Björk moved to London to pursue a solo career; she began working with producer Nellee Hooper, who had produced for Massive Attack, among others.

Homogenic:
Their album Homogenic was released later in 1998, marking a spectacular shift from her earlier "pixie" image. Björk worked with producers Mark Bell of LFO and Howie B on the album, as well as Eumir Deodato; numerous remixes followed. It was her first conceptually independent album, regarded as one of Björk's most experimental and overenthusiastic works to date, with beats reflecting landscapes of Iceland, but most notably in the song "Jóga", fusion of lush strings with rocky electronic crunches.

Drawing Restraint 9
Björk released the album The Music from Drawing Restraint 9 on July 25, 2005 in UK and on August 23 in U.S. It is a soundtrack to her boyfriend Matthew Barney's movie of the same title; Björk explores traditional Japanese music styles to complement the experimental film, and two lovers find themselves on a whaling ship and participate in a bizarre tea ceremony.

Volta:
Björk's sixth full-length studio album Volta, a follow-up to 2004's Medúlla, was released on May 7, 2007. It was primarily written and produced by Björk herself and features ten new tracks. It features contribution from much-admired producer Timbaland, Antony Hegarty and Sjón among other artists.

Other projects
Björk is also contributing songs to several forthcoming releases by other artists, to be released in early 2007. She is also contributing vocals to Valgeir Sigurðsson's new album, titled Equilibrium Is Restored., and her long-rumored cover of Joni Mitchell's song "The Boho Dance" will finally surface on a tribute album due on April 24 in the USA.

Björk in film:
Björk's acting career began in 1990, when she appeared in The Juniper Tree, a tale of witchcraft based on the Brothers Grimm story of the same name. She played the role of Margit, a girl whose mother has been killed for practicing witchcraft. Björk also had an unaccredited role in 1994's Prêt-à-Porter.

Name and ancestry
Björk usually goes by her first name only. This is normal for an Icelander to be referred to by his or her first name.

Björk means "a birch tree" in Icelandic (the meaning of Icelandic names is often transparent). Though many English-speakers pronounce her name "Byork," a more accurate approximation would be "Byirk," which she has pointed out rhymes with "jerk." Guðmundsdóttir is pronounced roughly "GVUTH-muns-doh-tear", and means "Guðmundur's daughter".

Personal life:
Björk and her partner, artist Matthew Barney, have a daughter, Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, born October 3, 2002. Björk also has a son, Sindri Eldon Þórsson, born June 8, 1986, with Þór Eldon, who was her band mate in the Sugarcubes. Sindri is a journalist and plays bass for several bands at present.

In an interview with Diva magazine in October 2004, she said "I think everyone’s bisexual to some degree or another; it’s just a question of whether or not you choose to recognize it and embrace it. Personally, I think choosing between men and women are like choosing between cake and ice cream. You’d be daft not to try both when there are so many different flavours.”
