Arctic Monkeys Tickets Information
The Sheffield-4 or Arctic Monkeys consists of Alex Turner (vocals and lead guitar), Nick O’Malley (bass guitar and backup vocals), Jamie Cook (rhythm guitar and backup vocals) and Matt Helders (drums and backup vocals). The band was formed in 2002 and their first gig was in their native Sheffield in 2003. Early appreciation from fans encouraged them to record even more songs. A collection of these songs were later burnt on a CD under the title Beneath the Boardwalk and was given away generously by them at their gigs. This CD, which was not their debut album, was shared online amongst their fans. Initially, rather than the mainstream media, it was the word of mouth and internet which made their music popular. But as the word got to the mainstream media, it didn’t take too long for BBC Radio to air their music. British tabloid, too, started to give them front page coverage.
In 2005, Arctic Monkeys released their first single Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys . This single had songs like “From the Ritz to the Rubble” and “Fake Tales of San Francisco.” In order to promote it, the band performed at Reading and Leeds Festivals. Although these festivals are usually for lesser known bands, Arctic Monkeys performance was much publicized by the media and hence attended by a large crowd. Although, initially averse to signing major record deals simply for the sake of maintaining originality of their work, they signed with Domino in 2005. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor was their first single under Domino. It was an instant hit, reaching the very top of the UK charts. This single even broke previous records held by Robbie Williams and Sugababes. Their second single was When the Sun Goes Down also topped the UK charts, like its predecessor. The ball started to roll for them after these two mega successes.
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not was the band’s first studio album, which was released in 2006. This album gave them an unprecedented success. Becoming the fastest selling debut album in the history of British music, the album sold over 360,000 copies in the very first week. The NME magazine declared Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not “5 th greatest British album of all time.” The album did incredibly well in America as well by becoming second fastest selling debut indie rock album.
In 2007, their second studio album Favourite Worst Nightmare was released. This album, too, was a chartbuster reaching number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. At 2008 BRIT Awards, it won the Best British Album award. In 2009 came their third studio album Humbug . Many of the singles of the album were chartbusters, earning the band even more accolades from fans and critics. Suck It and See which will be released this year would be their fourth studio album.
English daily, The Guardian once asked a question regarding the band: “Have the Arctic Monkeys changed the music business?” The band has often been credited for breaking into the mainstream without the use and support of mainstream media. According to the paper “The internet unarguably played a hefty role in the band's success: from the start, their website not only allowed fans to download songs which subsequently spread like a rampant outbreak of nits, but also enabled the band to maintain a direct, Doherty-esque contact with fans.”
Arctic Monkeys music interestingly has been classified as evoking images of working class life. Furthermore, their music has been labeled as appreciating social realism. These two parallels have made their fans and critics draw similarities with bands like The Streets, The Strokes and Oasis.
