The state has long been known as the center of the cattle industry in America. The oil disco vies of 1900s changed the fate of the state forever and the state's exports boomed. The prosperity can be well seen in the city of Waco as well. The total area of the city of Waco, as per the United States Census Bureau, is 95.4 miles square, of which about 83.9 miles square is land and the rest 11.34 % is water. The total population of the city, as per the stats of 2007 was 122,222, of which 51.1 % are non Hispanic Whites. Just like everywhere else in the State of Texas, Hispanics make the biggest minority of with 23.6 % in the city of Waco as well. The climate of the city is extreme. Summers are long and hot. The temperatures can reach as much as 112 F in the months of August and September. Precipitation rate is highest in May, about 4.5 inches. July and August are the sunniest months. Snowfall is not uncommon either. December and January can receive as much as 1 inch of snow annually.
