Wabash is a city in Noble Township, Wabash County, Indiana, United States. The population of the city was estimated as 11,342 at the 2006 census. The city is the county seat of Wabash County. On March 31, 1880, Wabash became the first electrically lighted city in the world.
Geography
Wabash is located at 40°48'3?N, 85°49'38?W (40.800799, -85.827163).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.1 square miles (23.7 kmē), of which, 8.9 square miles (23.1 kmē) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 kmē) of it (2.73%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,743 people, 4,799 households, and 3,100 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,319.0 people per square mile (509.4/kmē). There were 5,136 housing units at an average density of 576.9/sq mi (222.8/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 96.85% White, 0.37% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population.
There were 4,799 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,401, and the median income for a family was $44,016. Males had a median income of $32,324 versus $21,274 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,210. About 7.9% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of that age 65 or over.
Wabash Railroad Historical Society
The Wabash Railroad Historical Society is non profit organization, with a collection of historical artifacts and equipment of the Wabash Railroad Company. The society was established in 1975 and was incorporated in the State of Missouri in 1989.
Wabash Valley
The Wabash Valley started as a small agricultural flooring manufacture and has gradually emerged as an outdoor furniture manufacture. The company deals with Plastisol coated furniture. Wabash Valley has grown into a successful name.
Wabash College
The Wabash College is a liberal arts college for men founded in 1832. Students from all around the world come here to acquire Bachelor of Arts degrees. 90 percent of students receive some form of student aid. The campus of the college is huge, spread over 60-acre of area. 900 male students come from 34 states and from about two dozen foreign countries.
More than 95 percent of the 90 faculty members at Wabash hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Wabash's special strength lies with a faculty dedicated to teaching undergraduate students.

Graduates of the school include 19th-century American writer and military leader Lew Wallace and Thomas Riley Marshall, 28th vice president of the United States. During World War II (1939-1945) the school nearly closed when most of its students enlisted in the armed services. The college remained in operation by establishing a training program in cooperation with the United States navy.
Wabash Center
