It also is a part of a river, and is said to have branches of it flowing through the watershed. Sterling Heights was born in 1968. Earlier its name was Sterling Township. There was already a village by the name of Sterling, and according to the state law, no two area can have the same name.

So keeping the state law in mind, Sterling Township was changed to Sterling Heights and thus the new city with a new name came into existence. Sterling Oaks was a name under consideration too but it was Sterling Height that was chosen as the name. Initially, there had been a variety of people residing in the city, and therefore the racial makeup of the city included majority of whites, African American, Native American, the Pacific Islander, and a few from other races.

There have been a few known people who were the first residents of the city but have now shifted else where. The city is also home to a county park famous for hosting concerts in the out door theatre. How ever, people residing near to the park complained of the loud music that enveloped from the amphitheatre. These complaints led to a legal battle between Sterling Heights and Hillside production which runs the theatre. The hill side productions filed a suit in state courts accusing the city officials of conspiring to interfere in its work. And an out of court settlement took place, agreeing to pay Hillside productions in millions. And the production part then built in a huge roof to cover the pavilion seating area. When the concerts resumed so did the complaints of thy neighbors. And this time Sterling Heights sued the insurance carriers who acted against the compensation lend to production house and won. The residents of the city fight for their rights and are supported by its government too.

Sterling Heights community has many persistent events to its credit. One that occurs in every February and another every August. These events are awaited anxiously by the people of the city. It is because of these events that an annual magazine of the city has ranked it 19th of the "Best Small Cities" to live in.
