Portland is one of the largest cities in the United States of America. It is a capital of the state of Maine with a population of around 63,882 It also occupies a central place in the economic, social and cultural activities of the state. Every Year so many tourists visit the Portland's historic Old Port district along Portland Harbor, which is at the mouth of the Fore River and part of Casco Bay. Portland Head Light in nearby Cape Elizabeth is also a a very popular sight for the tourists.

Tragic History
The Portland city has a strange history as in was inflated with fire at different intervals in history and it had a change in name four times therefore city’s seal “ I will rise again” also depicts the same spirit and psyche of the people of the land.

The city was completely destroyed in 1695 due to the attack of Wampanoag people during King Philip's War. It was rebuilt by the community but the second disaster came in the year 1775, when the city was again destroyed by the Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War.

Portland's economy was greatly stressed by the Embargo Act of 1807 (prohibition of trade with the British) and the War of 1812. In 1820 Maine became a state and Portland was selected as its capital. Portland was a center for protests concerning the Maine law of 1851 culminating in the Portland Rum Riot on June 2, 1855.

The deadly fire of 1866 on the independence once again destroyed the whole city and hundreds of houses, churches and other buildings were destroyed. Then the city was rebuilt on with the use of brick and it acquired the styled town having that type of architecture all around. Even today the city has the same appearance as every effort has been drawn in the near past to maintain the historical Victorian style of the buildings. It is still considered to be one of the most admirable small cities of Unites States.

Rebuilding and Other Facilities at Present
There is built an indoor shopping mall I 1970s named as Main Mall. It has developed a new culture as so many departmental stores, franchises and small restaurants have been opened especially on the Congress street or Free Street. It has been proved to be a very enriching experience for the local residents as they can have an access to every kind of products near their homes.

It was initiated in 1990s that the city should be restored to its original style. For that purpose, Maine College of Art has done so many efforts to revitalize the city to its original design and it has worked on many buildings of the Congress. Its students have restored the famous and historic Porteous building, the Baxter Building, once home to the city's public library, as a computer lab and photography studio. The city is facing a great change in the process of architectural restoration and building of new ones around and it has really got the atmosphere and charisma to capture the attention of every new visitor in a first glance..
