The latest spelling of the town ?Hitchin' was formalized in the early 17th century. A small river passes across the region and has made an impact also on the town's name. On maps, the river is called River Hiz. Hitchin is recognized for a large church that is extraordinarily large for town of its size. This is an indication of how Hitchin gained from the wool trade. The church's name is St. Mary's Church with its settings from the 15th century. However, during its refurbishing in the early 19th century, foundations of an older church have been found. The town has progressed greatly in technology, and by the end of twentieth century, Hitchin became a satellite dormitory town for London. Hitchin has also got Sikh citizens whose number have expanded in the Walsworth area. Hitchin also holds one of the largest free festival of music annually called the Rhythms of the World.
