Referred to as the Chocolatetown and "The Sweetest Place on Earth", Hershey is a census-designated place (CDP) in Derry Township in Dauphin County in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 14 miles east of Harrisburg. The community has no legal status as an incorporated municipality and all municipal services are provided by Derry Township. The population was 12,771 at the 2000 census.

The Hershey Company, known until April 2004 as the Hershey Foods Corporation is the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America. Also called Hershey's, it permeates the town by the aroma of cocoa on some days. Founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company, a subsidiary of his Lancaster Caramel Company, its products are sold worldwide.
Hershey's is also one of the oldest chocolate companies in the United States, and an American icon for its chocolate bar. The Hershey Company owns many other candy companies and is also affiliated with Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company, which runs Hersheypark, a chocolate-themed amusement park; the Hershey Bears hockey team; Hersheypark Stadium; and the GIANT Center.
The history of the place traces back to 1876, when Milton Snavely Hershey founded a candy shop in Philadelphia. After trying unsuccessfully to manufacture candy in New York, Hershey returned to Pennsylvania, where he founded the Lancaster Caramel Company, whose use of fresh milk in caramels proved successful. In 1900, Hershey sold his caramel company and began to concentrate on chocolate manufacturing.
He began construction of a chocolate plant in 1903 in his hometown, Derry Church, Pennsylvania, which later came to be known as Hershey. The milk chocolate bars manufactured at this plant proved successful, and the company grew rapidly thereafter. . Currently, Local 464 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers represents the Hershey workers, and although it calls itself the "Chocolate Workers" it has successfully organized workers in other local industries.

Also located in downtown, The Hershey Story is the museum that celebrates the life and legacy of Milton Hershey. Hershey Gardens were created in 1937 by Milton Hershey. Sprawling over 23 acres of theme gardens; the place is a dazzling setting filled with beauty, serenity, and fun.
Hershey is home of the nine-time Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Bears is one of the oldest hockey teams in existence and one of the few remaining original teams of the AHL. Hershey was once home to the Hershey Wildcats of the A-League.
This professional soccer team was folded after the 2001 season by its owners, who decided that it would not be successful financially. The Wildcats were named after a popular roller-coaster in Hersheypark. Hershey was also home to the Hershey Impact over the AISL indoor soccer league. NBA basketball player Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game played at Hersheypark Arena in 1962; his effort remains a single-game record for the league.
