RiverVision is bi-state collaboration between Davenport and Rock Island to transform the Mississippi River's edge into one of the most compelling waterfronts in the country.
Education
As of education, davenport holds a strong educational network throughout the city. The Davenport Community School District is the second largest school district in Iowa, serving nearly 17,000 students in the communities of Davenport. The education system of Davenport is diversified into elementary, high and intermediate schools. The city has three public high schools, one private high school and six public intermediate schools.
Nearly 22 public schools are running successfully under the city government. Among them are Adams, Blue Grass, Buchanan, Children's Village at Buchanan, Hayes, Hoover, and West, Eisenhower and many. There are also six private schools from kindergarten through eighth grades, which include Sacred Heart, St. Alphonsus, St. Paul the Apostle, John F. Kennedy, All Saints, and Trinity Lutheran School.
However, the high schools are part of the Mississippi Athletic Conference for sports. The city is home to the three higher education schools named Palmer Chiropractic College, Saint Ambrose University, and Kaplan University.
Events and Festivals
Be a part of the celebrations of Davenport as the city is regarded as the most happening place in the county. Numerous well-known music festivals take place in Davenport annually. However, notable festivals keeping up the energy of the city are the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, The Mississippi Valley Fair, and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival.
The Bix Fest is a three-day musical festival dedicated to internationally renowned jazz cornetist, pianist, composer, and Davenport native Bix Beiderbecke. Many traditional jazz bands rock the stage with their thriving performances. The festival began in 1971 and the year 2008 will be the 38th consecutive festival. Besides Bix Fest, the Wells Fargo Street Fest features live music, luscious food, and other vendors.
Held in late July or early August is the six-day Great Mississippi Valley Fair. The fair garbs huge attention from the dwellers as well as outsiders alike for featuring major grandstand concerts, carnival rides, attractions, and food vendors.
Sturgis on the Mississippi River is a large annual gathering of motorcycles, which features bands and food vendors. Also of excitement is an internationally known seven-mile foot race called the Bix 7. The Bix 7 is a part of Bix Fest, started in 1975 and has often been run by more than 20,000 people.
