Camden NJ was primarily incorporated as a city in1828, from portions of the now-defunct Newton Township, while the area was still part of Gloucester County. Later, in 1844, the city became part of the newly formed Camden County. According to 2000 United States Census estimates, the city had a total population of 79,904 inhabitants.

The city's public schools are operated by Camden City Public Schools. Camden is home to the campuses of Rutgers University and Rowan University in the downtown region. Additionally, it has one of Camden County College's three campuses. Camden is also home to a nationally recognized Cooper University Hospital, and referred to a leader in the area of trauma.
