The lyrics of the musical were written by Alain Boubill along with Jean-Marc Natel . Its libretto in English was written Herbert Kretzmer . It is an adaptation of a novel of the same name which was written by Victor Hugo . The musical premiered at London’s Barbican Center in 1985. It was a huge success and still is today. This is why it has the distinction of being the world’s longest-running musical, West End’s second-longest and Broadway’s third-longest running presentation.
