Young Frankenstein Tickets Information

Young Frankenstein is a musical with a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Brooks and Meehan began work on the project in April 2006. On October 2006 reading of the first draft of the script featured Brian D'Arcy James as Dr. Frankenstein, Kristin Chenoweth as Elizabeth, Sutton Foster as Inga, Roger Bart as Igor, Marc Kudisch as Inspector Kemp, and Shuler Hensley as the Monster. Cloris Leachman, reprising her film role as Frau Blucher, also attended the table read, and at the time it was widely reported she would be offered the role of Blucher for the stage show.

The pre-Broadway try-out started at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington on August 7, 2007 and ended September 1, 2007. The show is scheduled to begin previews on Broadway on October 11 and to open on November 8 at the Hilton Theatre. The plot is largely carried over from the movie, but some scenes are expanded to musical numbers, and many gags have been added or updated. Some scenes have been left out, and the ending is quite different.

The story line is related to Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon inherits a castle in Transylvania from his grandfather, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. His tightly-wound fiancee, Elizabeth sees off Frederick before he steams to Europe with the song "Please Don't Touch Me". In the city of Transylvania Heights, he meets his grandfather's hunchback henchman, Igor, who has hired the services of Inga, a yodeling lab assistant. The forbidding housekeeper of the castle is Frau "horse whinny" Blucher. He is surprised to find only insignificant books in the library such as the Kama Sutra. Before bed, the doctor is offered milk, but he emphasizes he wants nothing.

Frederick and Inga find the secret entrance to his grandfather's laboratory. Blucher's relationship to grandfather Victor is revealed in the Cabaret-esque number "He Vas My Boyfriend". After reviewing his grandfather's notes and asked to join the family business in a dream, he becomes committed to carry on the late deranged genius's experiments in the reanimation of the dead. The experiments lead to the successful creation of a Monster. Inga remarks that in using the body of a giant, every limb and organ would be larger. The villagers in a meeting are instructed to be on the lookout for grave robbers, while they wave at the good doctor out the window. Igor knows just where to find the brain of a genius and a saint. But he drops it. After the monster goes on a rampage shortly after waking, the doctor is distressed when Igor explains that he replaced it with one from some person whose first name was "Abby".

Eventually, Elizabeth ends up being kidnapped by the creature. But she overcomes her fear. She sees a different side of the monster, and sings that she seeks a "deep love, a firm love, a long love, deep inside of me". Lured away by the sounds of a French horn, Frederick attempts an intelligence transfer, but the monster does not wake, and Frederick is put to death. The monster returns using his newly transferred medical skills to revive and apologize to his creator. Thus the story has great twists and turns and it successfully engulfs the attention of the audience, despite keeping the entertainment in focus.
